Cam chain slipped, oil dropping?

My Zafira 2.2 05 plate, Z22YH direct engine would not start. It was taken to a garage where the mechanic thought that the timing chain had slipped, so he fitted a new timing chain kit, replaced the oil and filter, and eventualy got it all working. He checked the head/ valves etc. for any damage and all was OK, and replaced the head gasket.

He though the chain had slipped because the oil was 'dirty' and the tensioner(s) were not effective because of that. It had been serviced 10,000 mile/ 10 months previous to the failure with 'long life' oil.

It is now running fine, though is 'losing' oil. It is not leaking, so I guess it could be burning.

Any comment on the diagnosis of the mechanic, posts on this site seem to agree with him, or thoughts on the oil 'burning'? What could be causing the loss, what should be my next step? Oil is being lost at about 0.5l per 500 miles. Could something have been missed on the re-build?

you need to find out if it is burning so get someone near the exhaust while u rev it

to be honest servicing the z22se/z22yh/z20net every 20,000 miles is asking for trouble, they should have an oil change no later than 10,000 miles

Vauxhall love their new "long life" servicing! You can even go 20,000 miles on the LEH engine without an oil change according to the book. Mine gets done every 6 months, which is ₃₀₀₀ miles
