Just been on the Z22se shop and purchased the chain kit.

Question is should i order the balance chain kit aswell?

i was told by benny that dont replace that chain unless you need to

im not sure if it does need replacing tbh. Before i get the work carried out i'll have someone take a look at it to see the condition of it and go from there.

due to the age of the engines the guides are becoming brittle, I have stripped so many z22se engines I've lost count, but everyone needed new chain kits :silent:

i know its more expense but imo id order the other kit too. just think if that chain snapps and damages the new chain MAY cost you an engine.....

just my opinion thou - better safe than sorry

thanks Neil, it's sensible to get them both changed together to save the hassle in the future. It can't do any harm. Makes it easier when it comes to selling the thing, which wont be for the next few years anyway.

Wise move...got a car here that had 0.5mm warp in the head due to the balance shaft chain going cos as you know this also drives the water pump.

I've been to the shop again tonight and ordered the balance chain kit so that should keep things all in check. 🙂

I took my Car into a place called CarTech today to have the chains replaced.
The price agreed was £210 (inc VAT) was for the balance chain and the timing chain.

I then got a phonecall when i was at work and the bloke said that it the quote was for only just the timing chain :evil:

Im a bit fuming as you could imagine. The lad said that he has never had to replace balance chain as they never go, which may be true but the quides and tensioners do AFAIK.
Im still being charged the £210 for the work as he said this is for 5 hours labour at £35/hour for the timing chain alone.

What advice wuold you be able to give me here as i now feel like ive been ripped off?

Tell him he is a cowboy!!! Balance chain & Timing chain is in the same place so he is looking at them both at the same time. Its not rocket science.

I know Matt, it's a pity i live as far North as i do otherwise i would of travelled down :crazy:

So now i've got a balance chain kit sitting around. I just dont know why they couldn't have done it while they were in that vacinity. I don't care that balance chain's very very rarely go, if it's what i request then it's what get's done end of!

But the drive home was nicer, knowing that the engine has been looked after and i dont know if it's pyshcological or not, but the car performed better. But definately the throttle response was improved :thumbup:

From reading one of vocky posts, the cam chain needs to come off to fit the balance chain, so would have made sense to get it done while the cam chain is off.

Once the Timing chain is off its a 10 min job to do the balance chain. I know, i've just done it.
Most of the labour time's spent getting the cam cover and the timing cover off (and on)
I ordered just the timing chain kit myself, but when I stripped it down the balance tensioner chain guide had snapped off,
so i would defo. recommend doing both
