Wheel nut snapped

Well it's MOT time soon and my front tyres have lasted well but time for some new ones ready for the MOT and for some extra grip during this bad spell with the weather.

Popped to a good local tyre place near my wifes parents house and selected some tyres 5 minutes in the fitter came to see me the bolts had seized on and when he got to the locking nut the locking key snapped.

The shop called the local dealer and my genuine keys have not got the card in the keys so a new one cannot be had.

I am going back first thing in the morning, just hope they can get them all off as i now need all four locking nuts removed.

There are special locking wheel nut removing tools available. I have even seen them in Hellfarto's.

i had the same problem si. I had to bang a socket over mine to get them out sometimes the end of the bolt snaps off and then i beat a big trx bit into it. Its a friggin nightmare and hope you get it sorted.

Cheers guys well half the star is left on the locking nut so it might be enough just hope it doesnt cost me a fortune.

hope you get it sorted, on the wifes car the locking wheel key broke and a garage used a special tool for removing them.

I had the same problem with my Corsa but i had the card with the code on it so was lucky
My Calibra however didn't have a locking key but my mate had a tool to take them off

If you've still got a little bit left then try this. They tend to bend slightly so in affect corkscrew, the more torsion you put on them the more they push themselves off. This happened to mine and half the key snapped off. This is how I ended getting them off.

I also found the VX supplied tyre brace is not at a full right angle so it puts force on the wrong part of the key, hence the cross brace, it still fits inside a 17 inch wheel in the wheel well :thumbup:

Thats a cracking idea Rushy, didnt see your post until now or i would have tried it.

Small update, Went to tyre place this morning, I said we better try getting the rears off first as i knew i had taken them off. Both of those came off no problem.

Went back to the front and crack the locking nut actually snapped in half, the guy said they have a special tool so he tried that and it just snapped that as well.

They had no drilling.

Car will be booked in the new year to my garage.

I snapped 2 sets of VX locking nuts so in the end I went for aftermarket ones. I always torque the bolts to the correct setting and never let my tyre guy use an air gun and they still snapped. The VX ones are a poor design, although saying that if you cant even steal them with the key then I suppose there thief proof :wtf:

Had a few mares with lockers in work...vx ones are ok to remove in reality as the heads arnt that far into the wheels.... but the likes of merc/peugots the heads are a good inch or so into the wheel... .. i ususally warn the customer that i may damage there wheels before i even attempt to get them off, then either a nut welded to the stud does the trick or failing that various cobolt drill bits with a good dose of cutting fluid does the trick... last one i done cost the customer £75 in drill bits alone then an hrs labour on top... so he had a £150 bill with the vat

Well,

Just had my car serviced and MOT, it passed fine with just an advisory on the front tyres. Locking wheel nuts are now off and new tyres fitted took my mechanic a while but all good, he has marked one of my wheels around the bolt hole but nothing that major, main thing is that i have got the bliters off and new boots on the car :thumbup:

Cheers Matt, well i talked to a local bodyshop across from where i work and going to get the wheel fully refurbed for £40 with a colour match full prep and alloy fill and paint.

Will take some photos when its done.
