The Monaro is back! Fans of Vauxhall's Aussie muscle car may soon have cause to celebrate - because a replacement for the axed super-saloon is set to arrive in the UK next year.
Company executives are considering bringing this model, the all-new Commodore produced by fellow GM firm Holden, in from Australia within the next 12 months. And the down-under delight would replace the Monaro, which left Vauxhall's range following the end of production last year.
Holden is GM's leading rear-wheel-drive chassis developer, and the Commodore promises to be a much better car than the Monaro. Totally new from the ground up, not only does it feature more edgy styling, but it also uses a stiffer body - which will mean improved handling and greater crash protection.
In addition, positioning the wheels nearer the car's corners should boost interior space, while the suspension has been totally redesigned. Cabin materials are of a higher quality than before, plus there is more kit, with curtain airbags and ESP on most models. It uses a traditional front-engined, rear-wheel-drive layout, with a choice of 262bhp 3.6-litre V6 and 362bhp 6.0 V8 powerplants. There are three auto and two manual boxes, including a new six-speed self-shifter for the 6.0 and a six-ratio manual taken from Chevrolet's Corvette.
