Right now, I have the s95 in my jacket. Very good camera for low light, daytime and fast action. It never leaves my coat pocket and I even take it when I've a photoshoot to do as it's good enough as a backup camera when I don't have my 50D to hand.
A couple of points to note: It's wide angle isn't quite wide enough (28mm vs 24mm on the Sonys) and the panorama function's much more of miss than a hit.
But, you gotta ask yourself. Are you gonna be just point-and-clicking? You gonna shoot in RAW and post-process? Will you shoot in different PASM modes?
The Sony's new EXR sensor (in the WX1) is a direct competitor to the s95. I compared my brother-in-law's Sony WX1 with my s95 and I swear I couldn't tell the difference between photos from the Sony and the Canon.
The main thing the Sony (WX1) has over the Canon is practical, usable features:
-- proper panorama (think wide angle shots of the ski slope)
-- twilight mode (the Sony takes 6 photos, layers them on top of each other and subtracts the noise).
-- burst mode (takes 9 photos in a second; pick the ones you want to keep) Great for capturing action!
The Canon just doesn't have anything that compares to these functions.
What it comes down to is the Canon's a high quality point-and-click one trick pony camera and that's it. It assumes you have the experience, time and tools to get the shot you want.
The Sonys have all the features that you'll actually use on your snow boarding trip. It doesn't shoot RAW, but are you going miss it?
