New Mobo & heatsink for main rig

Recently been having trouble with my main rig with the odd bsod - doesn't happen under load

found out crucial ballistix ram is not compatible with the abit quad gt ix38 mobo after spending hours stress testing the ram and getting replacements [life time warranty ]

had a choice either buy new ram or new mobo

as i had a high spec rig as it was i wanted to keep the tradition going so i invested in an asus p5q deluxe [already modded the bios :]

feeling generous i also bought a scythe mugen rev b heatsink and omg this thing is the daddy - i seen NAS enclosures smaller than this

Case : Antec 900 Case with 1 x 200mm & 3x 120mm fans
PSU : HiperR 850w - [company has been dissolved so i got an antique here lol]
Mobo : Asus P5q deluxe with mod bios
CPU :Quad core Q6600 G0 revision [O.C to 3.2 ghz 1.23v]
Memory : Crucial ballistix pc2-8500 2x2gb
GFX : EVGA 8800GTS with modded heatsink & bios
HD:1 x 320gb IDE
HD: 2x 250gb sata raid 0
cpu cooling : scythe mugen rev2 cooler & 120m silent fan

I'd be suprised if you couldnt oc a bit more

yeh it is stable at 3.6 ghz - 1.4v

highest overclock for this setup is around 3.8 ghz 9 x 423

thinking of going down the I3/5/7 route but the increase in performance from a quad core is not high enough to warrant spending a few hundred quid on a cpu

if you want to upgrade but not pay alot... best option is AMD

the biggest amd cpu is 5 times cheaper than the highest i7 and gives a bit over half the performance if the i7
as for amd motherboard... cheaper than intel
more choices (amd, nVidia chipset)
i'm upgrading my asus crosshair (nf590a SLI)
to an asus M4n82-Deluxe (NF 980a 3-way SLI)
goin from 4x 1gb OCZ gold series 800mhz to 2x2gb patriot 1066 mhz
and as soon as $$ is there.. goin from a athlon 64 x2 6000+ (brisbane) to a Phenom II x6 1090T (Thuban)

you seen the power consumption figures for this cpu ?

i never seen anything like it

i only wont wanna pay over 1000$ for a cpu with 6 cores
250-300 is far enough 🙂 for something that will give me similar performance
if i want to build a 10 000$ pc i wouldn't buy either intel
i would still stay with AMD :p
AND nVidia... (i used to own one of each gen, from the riva 128 till the 8800 series "skipped the geforce 3", this week jumping to 9800s)
will run 2x 8800gt oc + 1 9800gt... soon to be upgraded to a trio of gtx 470 🙂

but that cpu uses 500w at full load when overclocked to 4ghz

you know what size psu you gonna need and decent one as well

i know about components pricing m8

amd has always been cheaper to build & OC

i remember my mobile barton xp2500 [laptop cpu] that use to overclock to silly speeds

i just want change my q6600 until i know i get my moneys worth and paying over £200 for a cpu is not an option imo

but games requires real pc :p
