Little more go?

Hi everyone,

My first post here. Please be gentle.

My car is a VX220 NA.

I am looking for a little more power. The present state of tune is: Thorney 2 +, Tullet Exhaust Manifold, P&P tb, 2.4 Inlet manifold, Courtney Remap, producing circa 173 bhp.

I have owned the car for 60,000 miles and really enjoy driving it. I appreciate the car as a whole, I find it a very exciting car to drive on a daily basis. I am just looking for a little more straightline excitement without going over the top and turning the car into a "straightline specialist".

As this is a road car I am looking to preserve the mid range but add power to the top end. Another 20 bhp or so would be perfect. I don't want to add the weight/complication of supercharging. I would prefer to keep the engine pure NA.

Any advice in achieving more performance would be very much appreciated.

I would fit some compcams next, they will work well with your current mods :thumbup:

which exhaust system do you have, a 2.5" system would also suit your engine's tweaks

ps: have you considered fitting throttle bodies 😃

I was thinking cams and head would be a likely suggestion. Balancer shaft delete is at the top of my list - cost per bhp/rotating inertial it is a no brainer.

Might be a good idea to go for all of the above at the same time for a noticeable improvement in acceleration.

My Miltek exhaust is designed for NA so I am guessing it is 2 inch. The Tullet Ex manifold was bought for my NA so I am guessing it is going to be 2 inch also. Even selling on Exhaust Manifold, Pre Cat removal pipe, 200 cell cat & backbox in order to buy 2.5 version is going to be an expensive swap over. Maybe there is one component in the exhaust system that is particularly restirctive????

ITB's are too expensive for me right now. I really enjoy my car already, the cost of ITB's would not put that much more of a smile on my face for it to be a worthwhile modificaton.

I would go for ported head with increased compression ratio and stage 1 cams
that will compliment what you have fitted already
there a few members with similar setup all enjoy what they have

you would not need to replace your 4-1 exhaust manifold or sports cat section, just the backbox, especially as it's a milltek - the smallest pipe inside the backbox is less than 2" :thumbdown:

very good bhp gains can be found on a vx220 NA from increasing the diameter of the U bend and backbox pipework.

I agree with the raised compression (11:1 CR), ported head and balancer delete - all work very well :thumbup:

Little question regarding the link.

I thought Superchips sold generic maps.

The guys engine had so many mods, it would have needed a custom map.

Would Superchips offer this service to anyone? Or would Superchips insist that the normal Joe would have to use Thorney as the re-seller of the Superchips map??

Im the guy with THAT modded engine 😃

Go to superchips in Buckingham, tell them the spec of your car, they will match it to what they have got on file already
(they wrote Thorny's map)
When i went to see them, i told them what map i wanted and the name of the person that had already been before me (AtomX)
They did one power run to establish a baseline (185bhp) uploaded the new map, power run again (200.8 bhp) a couple of tweeks to the map then i left a VERY man.

I now know where I am going with hardware. Assuming Superchips will offer the same service to me that they have offered to you guys, I know where to go for the software.

It is a real bind for me to get mapping done at Courtneys, it is a drive that just goes on and on. No disrespect to the Courtneys guys, it is just too far away.

When I spoke to John Thorne about mods he did not seem very interested and it looked like the cost of mapping was going to be astonomical.

Essentially the issue of who can do the mapping is the deal maker/breaker for me. The hardware changes would be pointless without the correct mapping.

I am really hoping Superchips will do the software for me.

I'll be going for the hardware changes in one hit so that I can really appreciate the difference. I would love to make the changes now but realistically it is going to be some months before I take the plunge.
