2.2 top end rattle

hey everyone

i bought a 2001 2.2 convertible last week, the advert stated that the engine had recieved a complete overhaul incl new chain, valves relapped, rings decoked, new shells etc

so i bought the car

about 5 days later i went out in it and when i come back to the car and started it, it sounded like a diesel with a bad rattle and then cleared itself so i thought it might be low on oil, checked oil and it was fine

later that evening i took it out and put my foot down a bit to join the moterway only to be greeted by the ecu light 🙁

i phoned the guy i bought it from and he agreed to take a look

now all he said was that he could possibly be the timing chain and that it might of had the wrong oil in it so he has flushed it out and now put 5/40 in it and there is no noise anymore but cant explain ecu light being on

also when you rev'd the car it was popping from the exhaust and was ticking over lumpy

so i now dont know what to do so if anyone has any light they could shine it would be most appreciative cheers..

Hi i dont have any top end rattle, but did have lumpy idle a slight popping back through exhaust. I replaced the cts sensor, blanked off the egr valve etc, fitted an egr cheater and all seems well the lumpy idle is 75% better, but not perfect :?

Reading through the forum, 2.2 engines seem to suffer with this apparent problem with lumpy idle. Vocky to did suggest a
timimg chain fault ie jumping a few teeth can cause these symptoms.

I have noticed a slight surging at about 2000 to 3000 rpm when the engine is cold and applying light throttle. I did have a problem like this but far worse with a cavalier SRI 130 back in the early 90's used to buck back and fourth as you were coasting. Had a superchip fitted and the car was as sweet as a nut.....

Have you cleaned the throttle body? this can sometimes get coked up with carbon and cause rough idle

rattle could be tensioner not working - chain bouncing about

lumpy idle etc could be timing out

get it looked asap cos if your chain plays up then it could get expensive

well im seriously thinking about telling the guy that i want my money back as the car is not as described 🙁

ok took the car back to the guy and he said he had flushed the oil out and put 5/40 in it and now couldnt hear anything

when we picked it up it rattled while firing up and then run ok

drove it home, got out with engine running and.....................it still sounds like a diesel arrrgghhh

doesnt sound good at all! I took my car to Vx and paid quite £600 for my chain to be replaced.

did they release the tensioner, easy mistake to make and easily fixed

i honestly dont know but i think its time i got my tools out

if you could advise how to do this i would be very appriciative (in a non gay way of course lol)
