Chain Replaced - Not starting

Hi again,

After having a chain failure and destroying all 16 valves, i replaced them all, i have now finally got the engine back in 1 peice and refitted & timed the two chains. I turned the engine over by hand and it was fine, i also started it up, it needed a jump from another car, but it fired up eventually (this was done with the fan belt & pulleys were off) i spotted a small leak from the ignition so i replaced the injector and cured that problem.
Now with everything back together and all belt and pullys reassembled it refuses to even turn over. It is just clicking as if the battery is completly flat. I have charged the battery so that the green light shows, and also tried jumping it off another car with no success.

Is it possible that the battery is nakerd (even with green light showing), or is it possible that i have overtightend something so that it wont turn. Is there something that i should try / look at before i remove the cover and triple check the timing & chains again?

that sounds like the solenoid/starter motor mate. try taking it off and cleaning it including all electrical contacts and refit. Hopefully its just a bad contact

thank you ... i will try tonight. It is a new starter on there too (as that was thought to be the problem before the chain was found). So its possible that it could be fitted incorrectly.

I have had a 21mm spanner on the end of the crank bolt and it will still turn by hand (it is quite tuff to turn but it does turn). When i do turn the key, it makes all the dash lights flicker and radio turn off etc, but im guessing that it maybe because its using all its power to try start.

Worth mentioning that i have tried to turn it over with the rocker cover off and i can see the chain inching round.

If its stiff turning engine by hand that suggests everything is in order there. It definately sounds like the solenoid/starter from what you are describing and could just be some dodgy leads connected to it if its new.

i agree, check your earth straps as well?

was the motor new or re-con?

worth noting those batterys can lose their edge and still show a green light...

Ok thank you for your advice guys, i wont go through the effort of taking the chain covers off again then 😃

Its the original head that has been skimmed and new valves and guides fittted. When i re-assembled i fitted new rockers, and a few hydralic lifters, as well as both chains too.

The battery is a genuine GM battery, but still looks new'ish. Either its never been changed and is now 7 years old and is overdue a replacment, or the last owner got a new genuine battery for it (as it does have all vauxhall service history) I did put i multi meter across it and it read 11.8 volts, is this close enough to 12v needed or would this suggest i replace?

I might get some more meaty jump leads on it and give that a try too.

I will whip the starter out when i get home tonight and check everything over, as it wasnt fitted by me originally. Thanks again ... will keep you updated. :thumbup:

Give the starter a good hit with a hammer to see if it frees up if it proves that it is at fault as said whip it out and give it a good cleen up or get yourself a recon.

Hi there, i swapped the battery for 1 in my diesel Leon. It starts up but is a little lumpy with the managment light on.

Any ideas? notsure.gif

could it be the battery not being correct for car?

You need to read off the codes really.

Are 100% the timing and balancer timing is bang on?

Yes the timng is spot on. Sorry its not the managment light that is on, its the exhaust gas light.

Could i have installed the injectors incorrectly, or could one be blocked?

sounds like a bad connection, is the ecu earth ok and also clean up the battery connections and engine earth strap

I have just popped out with a tourch and the ecu earth is fine. But where can i find the engine earth strap & the rocker cover strap?

you have one that attaches to the right hand side of the engine bay on the suspension strut ish,
the other to check is the one that reaches round the starter motor and connects to the bottom right hand side of the main block,

and the rocker cover one will be on the right hand side of the rocker cover (also clean up the starter motor contacts they get quite tarnished) :thumbup:

Cheers for that, i spotted where an earth would be connected to the rocker cover but there dosent seem to be a lead of any description to connect to it. I have got some earthing wire from work, i will make a strap up myself, while there i will check all earth's etc. I will also pull the new injector back out and just make sure its clean too (it cant harm to look i suppose).

the earth strap for the cam cover goes from the head (uses the same bolt as the black suppressor) to the cam cover (next to the coil pack)
