Loud Grinding/Rattle Then Radiator Fan Kicks In???

Hi All,

Ive been getting this loud grinding/rattling noise before the Radiator Fan Kicks in, It only happens very occasionally but it is loud and only lasts a second or two.
Not sure whether its happening because the Fan is about to start or the Fan is starting because of this, maybe the grinding is causing the engine to heat up rapidly and activating the Fan... Any ideas people?

I have also noticed a rattling in the exhaust, dislodged Pre-Cat I think, but would this cause the engine to overheat if it blocked the Cat? I'll be removing it soon anyway, once I'm back up the road. Or if theres anyone in Chester who loves to remove PreCats in exchange for Beer PM me. Lol

Hi there
I would probably spray some WD40 maybe in the mechanism of the fan? My precat was blocked badly didnt notice any extreme overheating to be honest. Is the car getting hot very quickly?

I havent noticed getting hotter any quicker recently. I havent timed it but t takes about 5mins, when driving.

I'll spray some in there soon, though the noises sounds alot louder than just a rough 'bearing' in the fan, although I'm probably wrong. This is my first car so its quiet likely. Lol
My first reaction to the noise was that it was in the engine.. As scary as that sounds, that something might be grinding around in there. The PistonRings, HeadGasket Kit and Timing Chain are being done soon i'll check then.

Try and pinpoint the noise is the best thing mate, leave car running with hood up and try and see where about its coming from. I'm sure one of the other guys will be able to help if you find out roughly where its coming from. Not sure if you already got one but get yourself a code reader I personally think for the sake of £40 quid it pay for itself in no time :thumbup:
