I have chain rattle but where has the oil gone?

Hi All

First post here and same as the forums for Peugeots and Landrovers I can't imagine how we fixed our own cars without these forums. Thanks for setting this up.

I have a 2003 Zafira 129,000 km with a rattly timing chain but that I will change. But all of my oil has gone in about 2000km since I checked it. I know I should have checked it earlier but it's the wifes car and I don't drive it to keep an eye on the kms.

No oil leaks and no smoke and no oil in the water. I have put in the oil that I had in the shed, about 2 ltr and it still isn't touching the dip stick.

A bit gungy on the oil filler cap as well.

I am not keen to start the car to get it up the steep drive into the shed especially without oil.

I have checked the engine number and it should the large squirter. when I do the chain should I replace the squirter anyway and also should I do the Balance shaft chain as well?

Lastly what doest the chain Kit contain?

they cane the oil in their twilight years im afraid! often by the time you check they will have used 1l (which is all the dipstick reads).
someone should be able to answer you soon on the chain kit or ask daz or benny. :thumbup:

oh also do a few attempts as the tube seems to get airlocks or summit and gives innacuerate readings (its pants)

if its using a lot of oil, e.g 1l per 500m its likely to be something else.

THanks for that, if it is normal to use a bit of oil I will check it more often, I'll drain what is left of the oil and check it out for contaminates.

Looking into buying the Kit online and freight to Australia, any tips on where to shop?

I just ordered the complete kit for my car a couple of weeks ago from Autovaux.

here is what i ordered.

Crank Seal = 90571925 £5.38

all up that worked out to be AU$680.

Only thing i forgot to order was the drive belt as well which I got from the Holden dealership for $55.

You don't need to get everything on that list but for the little bit extra you might as well replace whats needed to give the car a nice service.

If you compare that to Holdens pricing. IIRC timing chain kit $450 and balance chain kit $695.

Thanks for your help Guys, Just ordered the Parts from AutoVaux, Very helpfull as well.

Now for the tools I'll need, I have looked at a few sets of Torx sockets and spanners and I might order this one:

I think this should cover all of the sizes I need but is there any that I have missed out on? some kits don't seem to cover all of the Sizes.

I am hoping to get this all by the weekend to get into the Job on Saturday.

yep that should do the job, torx bits are funny old sausages and whilst it'll fuck em up a bit the size up or down (internal & external) will generally fit :thumbup:
that said there does seem to be enough you may just need a couple of larger internal ones that can easily be obtained from a local garage.

So if these babies use so much oil, should I put some thicker oil in it or should I stick with the 15w40?

Also as I Don't know what oil has been used in it in the past should I go a Semi Synthetic to cover both bases?

Have a look on opieoils website Matt for oil recommendations. For the 2.2, there are a few oils they supply.

Well I am into it.
I am trying to set the timing and with the Spark plugs in and out at stages in the cycle the chain falls away between the cam wheels and the snaps back up onto the guide I thought originally it was because I didn't have the plugs in so I put them back in and it does that same thing. the chain doesn't seen loose at all but I think this is the cause of the shocking engine noise.

Well I think I fond it.

I got the timing right, but the guide on the front or right hand side has disintegrated.

I have seen bits fall into the Sump. Bummer.

The other bummer is that one of the bolts holding the guide on has snapped off. Not sure how to get that out.

I just checked the top bolt behind the Allan Key Plug and it appears to have come undone.

Also there is a hell of a lot of carbon and Crap in the top of the head. should I clean this up or will that just clog up the oil galaries?
what would cause this after 130,000km

While I go and remove the sump. anyone got any ideas how to get that bolt out so I can fit the new one and can I use Copper Silicone gasket on the sump as I don't have a sump Gasket.

The sump doesnt have a gasket :thumbup: so a good gasket sealer will do the job nicely.

You need to make sure you clean all of the bits out. if there is bits floating round in there the oil strainer will block up and cause nasty problems.

As for the bolt you can use an easy out or stud extractor but you'l need some room to get a drill in and if that doesn't work you'l have to drill it completely out and put a helicoil in.

When is the timing chain due for replacement in the service schedule. My book is stamped but they rip the pages out one they are done. This obviously hasn't been done in the last 30,000km.

I have all of the bolts out of the sump but can't get the sump off, they must use some good stuff to seal it up.

My concern now is that I have alot of damage to the front Balance shaft sprocket. I have lost the timing mark and there wasn't one in the kit.

How can I fit the Balance chain without the marking on the Sprocket.? should i wait for a new one?

You can also see in this photo that the Timing mark on the timing chain crank sprocket the colored link is one link out of line with the dot on the sprocket. is this timing out now? This was before I took it apart. hope I can get this baby back together.

there is a mark between the teeth, I can just make it out in your pic

Hi again

In the interest of time and budget i have decided to replace the sprocket with a second hand one. any tips on changing one of these babies. I have a rattle gun but how should I hold it to undo it and what is the torque setting for the bolt when I do it up?
