Sata drives dont have master/slave as they run off independant cables. The jumper selects the speed setting eg. jumper present = 1.5gb/s, jumper off = 3gb/s. this is for the slower sata ports on the old motherboards when sata was first released.
The problem with the drive just may be the fact the file system is badly jumbled up and/or fat table errors (chkdsk will sort this out), that makes the drive appear to not work. Sometime you can hear it working (put your ear to it) but no icon appears. if this is the case just leave it working and eventually the drive icon will appear and then you can run chkdsk /f to clean the drive up!
If the drive is making very loud clicking noise just play football with it!!!
If its the IDE drive then ignore the above and ill crawl back to my beer and poker lol
