Z22SE engine weight?

Continuing on from my previous research - it looks like it will fit... Next question is as the title suggests.. What is the actual weight of a Z22SE, I've seen a figure of 148kilos mentioned, but I find it hard to believe that an all alloy modern four cylinder engine is actually that heavy. Dont get me wrong, I am not expecting miracles weight wise, but I was wondering if anyone can confirm or deny that weight figure?

I've also seen similar weight figures for the VX220T engine - which begs the question of where that cars 55kilo extra kerb weight comes from?? Are the side flaps and badges solid lead? showo.. It does make me think the previously mentioned figure is infact internet talk and that no one has actually weighed it all in??

So yeah, any one care to shed any light on this?

the crank weighs 17Kg - I weighed one at the weekend :thumbup:

I can weigh the seperate parts tonight - block, rods, pistons etc

not really but 2 of us lifted my scrapper in and out of a van unaided so i would say no more than 70-80kg???

As a reference;

*Ford Sigma/Zetec SE (1.6 focus/1.7 puma) is somewhere around 110kilos
*Ford Duratecs (mondeo 2.0) are circa 130kilos
*Rover K series 120kilos

Somewhere south of 130kilos is what I consider light, and about right for an all alloy four cylinder engine. 148kilos is possible, but seems very heavy somehow? Hopefully I'll find out either way soon. The engine has numerous other advantages, which is why it is a preference of mine. 8)

That sounds more like it, 130kilos isnt too bad at all... 8)

I wonder why it isnt used in more kit car applications?

I forgot to bring in the piece of paper with the seperate weights, but the bottom end weighs approx 60Kg without a flywheel (add 5Kg for lightened flywheel), no water pump (add 2Kg) and also with the balancer delete done

So a standard bottom end would be around 80Kg with the balancer shafts and heavy original flywheel

I haven't weighed the head yet, but I guess the engine without manifolds weighs around 120KG dunno..

Fair enough! it was a guess! there was no flywheel or manifolds tho, and the sump was dry!

the mrs's old man will be chuffed he's as strong as an ox as well! showo..

block - 22Kg
crank - 17Kg
craddle - 10kg
rods and pistons - 5kg
sump - 4kg
crank pulley - 2kg
bolts etc - 1kg

total - 62kg

flywheel - 5kg
clutch - 6kg

total - 11kg

so I weighed the complete bottom end and it was 73kg

will weigh the head later in the week when it returns from the engine shop

my complete head weighed 32kg with the head bolts etc, so my engine weighs 105 Kg without the starter motor / alternator / inlet / exhaust manifold.

So a standard engine would weigh approx 110Kg with the balancer delete done and a plastic cam cover :clap:

Vocky, without wishing to be a pain... am I correct in assuming you now or will soon have a complete engine/ gearbox assembly outside of the car?? If so, would it be at all possible to get some more measurements for me? You've been invaluable thus far, no worries if you cant, I'll wait until I am further into the project then look into it. This is all looking very promising though, Z22SE power looks to be the way forward. 8) 8)

I have a standard z22se, several M32 6 speed gearboxes and my saab 2.2 hybrid engine, so can measure whatever you need

Right, sorry for coming back to this a little later than planned, been rather busy.

I am currently unsure whether to make a quick mock up of the engine/ gearbox, in which case I'll need loads of dimensions... but first I'd like to know the position from the centre of the driveshafts to the furthest forward point on a horizontal axis. Basically, how far forward of the centre of the wheels the engine sits at its furthest point, I'll be after the shortest realistic distance for this in terms of chassis limitations, so I'd like to check this first. :thumbup:

the driveshafts point slightly rearwards, this helps move the engine over the centre line for the rear wheels, so you have quite a bit of play. You could align the driveshafts perfectly straight or even move them further back.

I have a vx220 is pieces at the moment, so whatever measurements you need let me know :thumbup:

Cool, I'll look at some more photos, get the measuring tape out again and then post back...

I am pretty certain I'll need the engine as far back over the rear wheels as possible, so I'll be looking at having the driveshafts either straight or if possible, slightly bent forwards with the engine as far back as possible? Hard to explain.

Could you possibly get me the measurements from the centre of the diff to the furthest front point on a horizontal plane? I'll need the measurement as this "<--->" rather than anything angled "</> if that makes it any clearer? (I dont think it does?! ha)
