Stem seal replacement project * day 1 & 2*

Here's my little project from today, head's off. valves removed. 16 new valves ordered 🙂 now just need gasket set.

By the look of some of the valves and the stem seals, Iv'e found the fault :rock: :thumbup:

Starting....

It gave up and let us have it

Waiting for valves to come, going to clean head and stuff up More pic to follow.

Timing chain looked brand new, jets had been changed and it looks recent. everything is marked up so thats a bonus.

Looks like it's not as bad as i thought and i'll have some money left for some :vxr: Bits🙂

Just a bit of cleaning today, then better spend time with family

So it's been a few days, wife insisted on me spending some of my time with her and the kids.

All bits now ordered apart from the Exhaust, oh and some engine silicone

Think her indoors wants her worktop back (i thought utility rooms were built for engines?)

Valves in and lapped in nicely

Throttle body, back side of it was caked in oil

Please DHL deliver my parts tomorrow so I can rebuild the head!

Manifold is all cleaned out, but it's in the car and its raining so no photo's :-)

I never saw that. perhaps i'll leave that there and it will bring me good luck (that it is only the top end that needs doing!)

Father in law is an ex army mechanic and said they were fine. I'm not a mechanic (just a madman with a haynes manual and enough guts to have a go) so not sure what i'm checking for? I'm quite mechanically minded though 😃

theres very little play in any of the valves,

If there is very little play in them they should be good.

Im not a mechanic eather. just crazy enough to have a go at it :lol:

It'l be a good job when finished and hopefully it'l sort your problems.

I hope so, just waiting on some VX parts (fuel rail o rings and new manifold studs) then it will be back together time.

do i have to be gentle with her for so many miles or not after a head refurb?

Id give it 200 miles carefull driving.

That way the ecu can re learn and it'l wear bits in properly.

Would you change oil and filter again after 200 miles?

and by gently I take it you mean not above 3000rpm ish 🙁

I'm gonna have to drive 100 miles up the a1 to come back just to be able to drive the car again :thumbup:

I normaly go about 40miles under 3000 then 20 under 4000 then after that push it to 5 for a bit.

I think the trick is to do a vairyd drive of hills motorway and country roads. then you get different loads on the engine :thumbup:

Probably change the oil after about 500miles .
