the head work begins!!!

hi all, got the head picked up today, not as clean as i thought it was goin to be but any more and he'd have too sand blast it which is a lot more work & money so not really bothered, the remaning isn't loose so it'll be ok and he hasn't charged me for it. it also went through the pressure test ok with no problems.

he's checked the run out of the valves and cleaned it all as it came apart and its all ok which is good.

this is what it was like last week:

he lapped the valves back in today too check they was seating ok and all is good and springs are returning ok.

is this (area in red) were the paste has been on the seat? so don't touch that when porting & polishing?

so the main question is how do i go about porting & polishing it? do i do the whole tunnel? as much info on this the better, please! dunno..

here the cams that i want to send to PIPER but not yet spoke to them, there website states astra/vx220 but will they do the vectra ones?

they all look good (only roller marks)

as above, as much help, info & comments the better. i'm learning every day doing this so please post your views & input.

piper do all z22se cams, they just list the vx220 and astra

after seeing others i thought it would be cleaner but its a very small place and the only place within 40 mile to me. the cost is probly less than half the price of others and there daily work is normally a quick skim for an old morris minor or simular.

the lad thats doing it all for me loves doing things like this and is the only one going to be touching this head, hes obviously limited to the tools, etc there for cleaning, but once i've done the polishing hes goin to carry on in his dinner if theres bits i carn't get too so i'm happy that its going to be looked after as hes got a interest in doing it.

is it really worth paying the cash tho to get it sand blasted out? but the head was a right mess after lots of neglect and it being sat in a scrappys for over a year.

just too add, i've just looked at the pic and its not as bad as the camera has made it look, its nowere near that dirty think its the flash or something and he did say he hasn't paid alot of attenion to the block side due to it going to be skimmed soon.

thats why i didn't want him too do it but he said that would be the only way they could get it cleaner but he personally wouldn't advise it. is it really going to matter?

its all cooked in colour.

think so, he didn't really do alot that side due to it's goin to be skimmed and this work is all free so far.

At the end of the day mate...it's a site cleaner than it was!! Took my head into work today and bunged it in the parafin bath, looks a lot like yours does now and without having it acid dipped it aint gonna improve it.

no point spending loads m8 just for you to make a mistake

i find the best way of cleaning is parts is to soak it in petrol then hot water of it

if it is electrical then petrol & wd40

considering the build up of oil and sludge they have done well to clean it up, if you get some parafin and a stiff brush it will help to loosen the remaining gunk, then another clean at the engine shop should get it looking much cleaner :thumbup:

heres a pic of how it was and if you really look you'll see that its not just a light covering its acually found its own places to start building up on top of thick flakes of the stuff! :thumbdown:

he said he got some more off with a small brush and strong degreser but is it goin to be worth trying for that little bit more and then paying for another clean as i don't think a second one would be free?

could someone just confirm this for me?
he's lapped the valves in with some paste and said i should be able to see were they go so know not too touch it when porting, is it this bit on the edge (in red) also whats the best way around the port & polish? exhaust side, take it out to the gasket size and keep going at that til i get to the vavle seat? but what about the inlet side?

Its easy to see how oilways etc. get clogged up when you look at the gunge in those pics.

If you can help it dont touch the valve seat at all. one mark in it and you'l have to get it laped again.

As said give it a clean with a small brush and parafin or equivalent. It's a dam site better than it was. At the end of the day if you had payed full price for a professional clean then you could argue that it could be better. Just keep going with what you've got. you can actualy see what your doing now its clean and once you do all the port work it'l need cleaning again anyway 🙂

not a problem Mike, i don't get offended that easy mate! i'm just hoping your wrong and i won't f**k it up, i've committed to taking the engine out end of next month now and doing all of my tuning from start to finish over winter time (that until next year when i'll want a SC)
