i had a cat who was 10 months old that smashed up its rear leg - cost me £1200 to get it sorted, made a decision there and then that if it lost its leg then i would put it down, only cos it was so young that the pet had the chance of leading a normal life according to the surgeon - surgeon told me the cat will be walking around without a clamp within 10 - 14 weeks, it took 12 months for the cat to be back to normal due to other issues i.e mental & side effects of meds
i still got the cat 4 years on and it limps around most of the time, even more so when its hungry but it has full use of the leg and climbs up fences and trees
personally mark i would break it down
- vet advise on ongoing illness and what to be expected in terms of complications and emergency treatment if required
- initial hospitalisation of pet and ongoing treatment
- pet insurance if you got it and if it covers ongoing illness and if so how long - and can the pet be insured with diabetes - what happens if you lose your job etc
- Standard of life of pet - i.e twice a day injections, change of food, general well being
- and how will and your partner deal with it cos it is gonna be for the life of the pet so it is not just the pet who has to live with it
you need to make the right decision for you & your partner, any other pets and the pet in question - sorry if i have come across as callous but from having non stop problems with cats over 2 years you need to think long term and not just short term cos once your pet leaves the vet then it is your responsibility to ensure it is as well as can be
