vectra c petrol guage problem?

Got a problem with a 1.8 vectra c. the trip computer is really inacurate, for example it read 4 miles remaining in the tank with no warning light on the dash and the petrol guage was just below 1/4 of a tank. stopped at petrol station and put a tenner in and the trip computer jumped up to 80 miles remaining.

Any ideas if there is a problem with a sensor or whether trip computers cant be trusted 100%? any input would as ever be greatly appreciated

The range on the trip computers is based on the last 20ish miles of driving style, so if you've been giving it beans, it will show a low range, and then if you take it steady again, it will go back up.
