what is it that makes an engine dirty?

hi all, after getting a spare complete head to use for the rework to be done i'm alittle unsure if i'm doing the right thing?

my Z22SE is very clean, no oil at all gets through the brether, the TB is still clean after i re-fitted it last year, the inlet looks clean-ish (manybe abit of carbon) the EGR was clean when i removed it, etc, etc.

this head that i have now is completly the oppisite, i'm pretty sure its just lack on mantanance but why is it so bad?

heres pics of inside the head, the TB & the inlet, stripped it yesterday and the EGR pipe is solid, nothing was getting through it, my worry is that if i do the work to this head, i'm not going to be adding stuff thats goin to ruin my clean engine am i?

Crickey thats got to be the worst TB i have seen. Sure that another technical member will help with the advice.

I think the main reasons for all that gunk is mixing grades of oil or not using the rite grade and not changing it frequently enough. looking at the state of it its a wonder if it ever had an oil change :wtf:

If you have it cleaned properly at a machine shop or head place it'l be fine. And while its there get them to check the valve stems for run out or damage and check over all of it. That way youl know what your up against.

If everything is fine it'l be just as good as any other head providing its cleaned and in good working order.

Also there is an oil restictor on the face of the head and if it ever got blocked up theres a good chance the exhaust cam will be damaged along with the bearing faces in the head.

Thats poor servicing to say the least,,,,
When i stripped down my old vec to do the chain it was spotless...and there was over 100k on the clock....and the oil was always clean when drained at service time...
I did a m8's of mine back last year, think there was around 65k on the clock and it looked just like the above pics...
I got him to come back after 500 miles to do another aoil change(due to the state of it) and when drained it was like black treacle again...

thanks guys, as you lot, it must be one of the worst i have seen.

so as long as it gets a good clean it'll be fine? can anyone explain why my engine is as clean as it is? it never has oil in brether therefore never has oil on TB or in inlet, don't what to add this and create a problem, even when it's cleaned will it put oil down the breather like most do or is it my bottom end that keeps it all tip top?

take the head to an engine shop and get them to put it in their engine cleaner tank, it should bring it back to almost normal :thumbup:

colour is due to a lack of servicing :thumbdown:
