Anyone out there who can advise?

Engine had a nasty rattle and I found the balance chain tensioner had failed. Replaced that and re-assembled engine (taking great care to get cam timing right) only to find it wouldn't start!!

Did a comp test and found it low (whereas it was ok before). Thought valves must have got damaged during strip-down or re-build, but when I took head off they were OK!!!

Now about to re-assemble, but still mystified as to why it wouldn't start and why comp low! I can only assume valve-timing was out...

I see the Haynes Manual says set timning to TDC on cyl 1, whereas links on this site say set to TDC on 4. Does that make a difference? Also, can the engine be 360 out?

Your help would be appreciated before I do somthing wrong (again)

piston 1 and 4 at tdc to set the timing

recheck the crank position timing

as vocky said mate no1 and no 4 need to be set at tdc id set this before you put head back on to ensure you dont foul the vlaves whilst setting it also set cams to roughly where they need to be before reassemabling, plenty of info on here mate done mine my self twice now and if i can do it anyone can lol
