Skimed head question????

I picked my head up today from the machine shop and im happy with the finish of it, only thing is theres alot of burr's in the water and oil ways and also around all the edges.

I asked the guy where i had it done if he thought it would be a good idea to de burr it and he replyed normaly people dont bother.

My way of thinking is that most people have belt driven engines wheras with z22se's with all the oil jets ,tentioners and so on only a small bit has to fall in and it'l cause problems.

Im a dab hand with a needle file so should i do it or not?

Id 100% get any burrs removed any tiny particals even not visible can clog the oil jets plus if little bit off metal are floating around over time it may course premiture wear of parts etc :buffer

By burrs i mean sharp/haggard edges left by the machine work, its like if you cut through some steel sheet with a disc cutter your left with a nasty sharp edge on the cut and in some cases with ally it gets a bit flaky and bits break off it.

Best i dont let that happen 🙂

NOGA deburring tool used from removal of sharp edges after machining or bandsaw cutting etc.....

or a trusty needle file.....

The NOGA tools come in a range of variations.

Iv got a de burrer but was a bit worry'd about using it just incase i sliped.

Iv bin out in the garrage and took all the edges off carefully with a needle file and gave it a good'ol blow out with the air line 😃

sorted. Now im laping the valves back in.

Im glad i dont do this for a living id never make any profit for the amount of time i take :lol:

you MUST remove the burrs infact it would be better if you could "break-edge" (that is apply subtle chamfer to remove right angle edges)

johnny's right those noga de-burrers are the don, :thumbup:
you can get a handle and five blades for around a tenner. the burrs are a bit more predictable too with few particles to stick to the walls of the channels.

Thanks lee. I spent about 3/4 of an hour with a needle file and cleaned it up and also gave them a very slight chamfer.

It now looks much cleaner and im confident theres no bits inside anyware 🙂
