bit of a "good" suprise today!

my mate found a scrap vectra last weekend for me to use the head off it for a project, went and had a quick look and arranged to go today and strip the car for the bits i wanted.

was told that the timing chain had snapped so after abit of haggling before hand due to poss bent valves etc, got the complete head for £50 which i thought was a bargain til today. considering the complete head turned in to the head, along with the inlet & exhaust manifold, TB, coil pack, downpipe with CAT and somehow got away with it.

took all the cr@p out the way and cracked the rocker off and thought " ok, the engine hasn't been srviced too much " due to the build up of cr@p in the breather pipe,etc. got the head off and turned it over to see this....

but soon realised the problem with engine as 2nd & 3rd were sat like this and the 1st & 4th fell to the bottom as soon as we touched them.

so i reackon its a bit of a bargain really!

also not sure whats with this cat as a OE pre-cat looks like this (i know its buggered, but thats why i have it as i've not seen one as bad as this) but the one i got today looks different and new? surly someone hasn't put a replcement pre-cat on?

yes mate, a freind does abit of work on the side that works for a engine tuning place near were i live and going to clean it up and do abit of reserch as to what can be done with them, and advise or pointing in the right direction would be great! :thumbup:

how much work can be done with the head? anybody?

alos might be a silly question but, my engine runs really clean in the way that my breather never get oil in it at all, were as this head has oil built up in the breather spout. is that the head or block thats going to cause this? basically if i fit this new head to mine will my engine start pushing oil through the breather?

That was a bit of a bargain then you :thumbup:

Theres a bit you can do to the head. If you scribe round the exhaust manifold gasket you can open the exhaust ports to that and the inlets can be opened up using a saab inlet gasket then porting them out smooth. It all depends on what other mods your going for.

Vockys thread on the harop build has some good info in it or have a chat with atomx.

Iv nearly finished the one im doing and its quite a few hours fettling it :roll:

cheers matey, wasn't going to do much with it but thinking as i now have it and its going to have some work done i might as well get as much done now as i can without taking it beyond the stanard running boundries (if you get what i mean)

i'd better get searching then!

as already said, open up the exhaust ports to the standard gasket, the inlet doesn't need as much work

there are a couple of threads in the tuning section showing how to port the head, take your time and I'm sure it will be worth the effort cheers..

thanks mate, i understand about the exhaust porting, not too sure how the inlets yet so i'd better get reading up,

what i hoping to do to engine:

ported & polished TB ( done )
cams (to do)
manifold (if i can find any about)
200c sports cat
2.5" cat back (done)
flywheel (to do)
look into balance shaft deletion (don't know alot about it yet)
and as much work as i can do to this head

and thats it, won't be touching the 2,4 manifold

a good choice of mods, but the 2.4 inlet manifold would work well with them - it is suited to highly modified engines 😃

I can supply the idler gears if you can send me the original balancer shafts, then you just need to push the rear bearings 7.5mm into the block - job done :thumbup:

try and get a tubular 4-1 exhaust manifold if you can, the dbilas cast exhaust isn't that great but really depends what you can find for sale I suppose dunno..
