2.0 turbo funny noise?

Just popped the bonnet of my car after noticing a funny noise🙁

When the car is idling its fine but when you dab the throttle a little there is a rattle/tapping type noise, seems to be coming from the back of the block around the air intake/turbo area, also when i lift off it seems like there is a rattle from the block itself(right hand side). The rattle in the block does sound chain like🙁but im really not sure what the noise if at the turbo area...

Ideas?

BTW the car has just turned 40k and has a full service history..

Been out and checked for anything loose (heatshields etc) and everything is fine 🙁

What are the sympthoms of a failing chain?

if you suspect it's the chain (and it sounds like it might be coming from the chain) don't start the engine, get the chain inspected asap 🙁

I assume the chain is on the right hand side of the block??

Left hand side then - so it must be something else than the chain as my noise is definatly the right hand side of the block :wtf:

Does the turbo have a dual mass flywheel?

Chain is drivers side mate, so right hand side of the car or left if your looking at it. The only thing on the passenger side would be the DMF as Matt said. Would the vac generator thing make any noise?

Does the rattle happen as the revs are rising or falling?

This is how benny explained to me how to check if the DMF is on it's way out

fully press the clutch to the floor brin git back slightly about 2cm then slightly rev the engine if the pedal has a vibration or pullses the dmf is on its way .... also you will get a low down grumble from the gearbox bell houseing

Im positive its not the DMF as i know the symptoms as i had one go a while back in my work van. I really cannot think what else could be causing this tapping/rattle when i blip the throttle...suppose i better get it into the garage :thumbdown:

the vac generator is the rugby ball shaped (ish) piece that is mounted on the back right hand side of the cam cover,
i presume from what you have said this is a z20net?

in which case that will be driven by the end of your camshaft..... id have thought someting would have to be pretty loose/fucked to generate noise like that..... :think:

Just reading over the posts again, are we getting confused to which end of the engine were talking about? Steve, is it coming from the airbox side or Battery box side?

The battery side Steve - right hand side.

I will get a decent look over the car tomorrow night to check for anything untoward

Got to be manifold/Turbo related then hasn't it in that area, what else is back there?

TBH struggling to find time to get a decent look at it as heading on holiday on saturday, will get it booked into a garage on my return 🙁

I was out in it tonight and it did not seem too bad so really confused now :wtf:
