Vectra 2.2 Bit of info please

Hi Everyone,
We are new to the forum, So thanks for taking the time to read our first post.

We are looking at buying a 2001 vectra 2.2 SRi, The millage is currently 130k. Milage dont really bother us so long as the engines runs smooth and the body work is clean.
Just need a bit of advise on what to look out for when looking at one of these cars? The bad points about them?
Is it likely that the 2001 2.2 SRi vectra is going to be chain driven as opposed to having a timing belt?
Ifso what is the common fault with the chain failing as i am led to believe this is a common fault.
Also is the 2.2 on a 2001 Reg Direct injection or is that on the LATER models only??

Any help greatly appriciated. :think:

it is chain driven
if there is no history of the chain being replaced then it will be need to be done so, if not cos of the mileage
the Vectra C came with static fuel pressure

Ok so we know its 100% timing chain, And as there is no chain change history with it then its going to need to be changed.
And as its one of the Last Vectra Bs being a Y reg 2001, Its not going to be Direct injection?

How difficult is it to change the timing chain kit? And anything to be aware of whilst changing it? Are there any signs of timing chain faliure or does it just let go?
What is the reason for timing chain faliure? As i see its quite a common fault with the 2.2 engines.

Any other mechanical issues to be aware of on this paticular engine??

Is there any members of this Forum in or around the Gloucestershire area that are intrested in doing the job?
Im pretty mechainaly minded so will muck in! Ive only done belts so Chains are new to me.
Willing to pay cash for a good job in return.
I will supply the Chain Kit.

If not then i guess im going to have to learn. LOL. notsure.gif

I havent picked the car up yet. Looking at it in the next few days.
So if we decide to buy it then we would be looking to get it changed straight away so its reliable.

We dont mind traveling to get the job done, But not really looking to travel hundreds of miles.

Would want someone whos done them before to do it. Anyone intrested?

Main thing to look for is a scraping metalic noise on cold start up and or a metalic rattle on cold start.

Where abouts in gloucestershire are you?

Other parts to get while doing the chain/chains are a new timing case gasket a crankshaft pulley seal and bolt, oil and filter. and possibly rocker cover gasket depending on condition.

Also have a good look at the water pump housing on the drivers side behind the engine these sometimes leak so if it is you'l also need a gasket for that.

Other problems are EGR faults and oil messing up the inlet and throttle body.

Also look for play in the steering rack and rear rose bushes and trailing arm bushes :thumbup:

We are in the Forest of Dean.
I see your From oxfordshire so not a million miles away, Been there quite a few times.
We are going to change oil/filter/fuel filter/air filter and plugs as soon as we get it, Aswell as change the chain. Then touch wood theres no reason why it shouldnt be reliable.

Do the gaskets/bolt and seals ect not come with the chain kit?

The kits are just chain, tentioner, guides, bolts and new oil jet.

The other gaskets and parts are available from vauxhall or some motorist discount places get genuin bits for trade prices.

You'l have to let me know when you get the parts together and ill see if im available :thumbup:

Ok that would be great. we'd be greatful of any help. Hopefully if we buy the car this weekend then sometime within the following 2-3weeks would be fine (Working around you).
I will get all the parts and gaskets and do it all at the same time. Its just the timing chain kit yeah?

The important one is the timing chain but there is also a balancer shaft chain that runs the balancer shafts and water pump. its really up to you if you want to change it.

They are known to fail but like i said its up to you or once youve seen the timing chain done you'l have the know how to do the balancer chain at a later date.

Have a good look in the timing chain section to see what it consists of and to size it up :thumbup:

Ok, It seems wise to renew both chains at the same time whilst its apart (Be stupid not to i suppose).

It's not advisable as far as i know.

I think the best thing to do is to wait until youve got the car and drive it around for a bit and get a feel for it, see how it cools and keep an ear on the cold starts.

I did the timing chains on mine and didn't change the pump and i dont have any cooling isues, and thats probably the same for alot of members on this forum.

Ah rite. Ok.
Just were going to be using it for towing later on in the year aswell. so as long as it cools fine then water pump should be fine? :thumbup:

direct injection was vectra C only :thumbup:

z22yh = direct injection
z22se = normal injection
