ticking noise on start up?

hi,

ive noticed recently my car has made a loud ticking noise on cold starts, it does it for about 2-3 seconds then is fine and doesnt do it all the time. anything to worry about?

also ive still got this whining noise from cold starts too which is bugging the hell out of me. i read a thread the other day about some bloke who done a super charger conversion and he said he changed the water pump and his car started whining so bought a genuine one but still whined. turned out his balance shafts wernt timed properly. thing is tho if they were not timed properly wouldnt it whine all the time?

Hello Lee,

Don't know about the whining noise, but your ticking noise on start-up isn't rare, it could be a crack in your exhaust manifold, but mine does it quite often, and I've had no problems. Main thing to keep an eye on is your oil level as i find it gets worse if the level is lower.

the ticking could be ur exhaust manifold i used to have a 140 that did it
some vx engines are prone for cracking manifolds and pulling the studs out of the head

i see what your saying its just annoying as it didnt use to do it. i had to rebuild the engine about 3/4 months ago as cam chain slipped and can now remember the ex manifold has got a thin crack in the middle but cant see how it can sound like fast ticking noise :?

dunno they just do. best bet is to check ur manifold to see if its happend again and if needed replace with a new one or a 4-2-1
and remove the precat as they recon it can cause the manifold to overheat and crack :thumbup:
