Chain snapped, should I repair or scrap?

HELP! :mrgreen:

I have recently bought a Vectra B 2001 150 SRI with a snapped chain.

I don't know anything about how it snapped, just that it is...

Is this worth fixing or strip the car and flog the bits?

Ideally i'd like to fix it but don't want to spend a fortune so maybe that's out the question?

Any way of knowing how much damage there is without taking the cylinder head off?

you could take off the cam cover and see it the valves are stuck open you could then tell within reason how many vslves are bent but as a rule after the cahin has snapped and the engine has been repaired people have complaned of excess oil use and smoking because of damaged piston rings?

a cam chain kit and parts is usually about £250+

personally i would change the engine and change the chain on that to be safe mate

My chain snapped on my Z22SE astra on a 04 plate, wrote the head off in terms of repair costs, I sourced a second hand engine, long story short mate,
engine £950
clutch £160
cam kit £120
head gasket kit £58
oil, fiters, flush etc £65

Depending on the damage you chain snappin has caused, you might be better off breaking it sorry to say?

Done 4 of these now and they are coming in at around £400 all in. £92 for head rework (8 inlet valve guides and reseat). £115 for genuine Vaux cam chain kit. Ebay gasket set £70ish. Valves approx £6 ea. Then you've got oil, filter and antifreeze. The biggest killer is labour if you cant do it yourself. Always best to whip the head off to check pistons though. I may have been lucky with those i have had as they have only just marked the piston crown. Running an Sri myself and it goes a treat.

Thanks for the replies guy's, look's like a job for the weekend to take the head off and find out what damage has been done.

It's not worth changing the engine as the car is not in great condition...

£1300 my Vectra ended up costing me, the chain hadn`t snapped, just jumped a couple of teeth when the guide broke away and melted itself to the bottom of the chamber.

Get another engine!, im going to be listing alot of my bits on here soon, had a rear end smash so selling my engine and tuning goodies!!

You should repair at that! £400.00 for the bits thats 8 valves an grinding paste gaskets balance chain an cam chain.... If you need some help just give us a msg

Don't know who told you this about the guides melting but that aint true?
