Burning oil

Hello I have just got myself a 2.2 bertone. New to the engine but think I got a bit of a dog Lots of strange things happening. She seems too be burning oil I get blue smoke but only at high revs. Also it idles lumpy but not all the time. Would a compression test tell me the rings are worn. Could worn valve stem seals give me blue smoke at high revs. Need help :crazy:

Valve guides maybe?

How many miles has the car done and was it a rebuild after a chain snap?

Done 54,000 and as far as I know never broke the chain. Is a compression test going to reveal anything. Is this a knock on effect as to why my idle is sometimes lumpy.

Lumpy idle could be coil pack egr or cloged up throttle body if it burning oil and you have a lumpy idel i would clean up the throttle body first as it is free and takes 15 minutes to do with some carb cleaner.

A compression test would be a start.

What oil are you using as well. I would do a fresh oil change with 10-40 semi and a new filter, then do a consumption test.

I cant believe the rings could be a problem only covering 54k they must be made of cheese. Unless its had a extremely hard 54k or its not genuine mileage. On one M.O.T it had a odometer reading of zero?? Got told that if the bulb has gone in the dash you cant read the mileage. It rang true because the previous owner said he had to have this replaced. Have I just had my pants pulled down here. :wtf:

I had my rings done at 48K, had it done under VXL warranty.

If you do a quick search on EGR you will find alot of information about it. Most just blank it off and use a cheater which can be bought from this site.

rings aren't unusual, mine was a smoker from around 70k, you gotta watch the oil level as there is only a 1l margin from full to empty, which when your cooking off oil isn't a lot and could cause further probs.

Here are the results from the compression test. All four cylinders are 200psi which as you all probably know is around 14bar.
What does that tell me? :problem:

The only thing that’s good about that result to me is that they are all the same. Could this mean my rings are in good condition and to concentrate on the valve stem seals.

The thing that’s bugging me about the whole thing is that I only get blue smoke out the back at high revs between 4,000 and when the pistons end up on my lap. 😃

I have exactly the same issue with my Vectra SRI 150, blue smoke when i boot it.... upto half a litre of oil on a trip.

I'm blanking the EGR tomorrow, I have been told to try that first and clean the throttle body (cheap options) then valve seals or rings. 🙁

I have the Astra G 2.2 SRi, and i am cooking oil too like its going out of fasion. I have yet to establish what it is but its bugging the st out of me. idle seems a little lumpy at times so going to give the throttle body a good scrub out, at the same time maybe port it too. I have removed both cat and pre cat, center section and replaced filter with cone. Goes like st off a shovel considering, wish i had got the 1.8 really though i think. lol

200 psi on all of them is good its more likely to be stem seals going by the compression test, And as sjdickso said clean up your throttle body and also look inside the inlet manifold if its full of oil and S*it give it a good cleen out then make sure you have no leaks from anyware else ie water pump, rocker cover, p/s pump and everywhere else.

I have the same problem with loosing oil and since sorting out a couple of leeks it has improved.

Can anyone tell me how oil gets into the throttle body in the first place because surely you want to look into stopping that from happening rather than just cleaning it.

Going to take the head make a good seal and stop her from spitting out my oil. :wink:

some people use an oil catch tank, there is a breather pipe on the top left hand side of your cam cover it feeds back to you inlet after the air filter

Its a combination of the oil drawn in from the cam cover breather and the exhaust gasses and soot the EGR valve recurculates through the inlet.

To stop it you can fit a catch tank into the cam breather and grab yourself an egr cheater from the shop on this site and remove and blank off the egr :thumbup:

Ive done both and its stayed cleen for a long time now.

All the crap and gunk that is in yours now has been colecting for a few years so its not like you'l be cleaning it out every week.

Ok maybe worth a look at getting a catch tank.

What does egr stand for and what exactly does it do?

Guessing Electronic something Regulator?? Dunno. Gas

Also it seems to be getting harder to start. Problem after problem I brought a right dog.

EGR is exhaust gas recurculation valve.

Basicly what it dose is recurculates the gasses back through the engine to lower emitions but as a side effect it chokes everything up and are generaly piontless.

They do tend to play up 🙁

Also if you want a catch tank i make them along with a few other bits in the link at the bottom of my post :wink:

Yes dude maybe I will do a deal with you. cheers.. Im quite new to the engine so I will be weighing the old girl up for a while before I start modding it.
Any answers as to why she is getting harder to start.

Probably needs a good service new plugs oil and filter and fuel and air filter would be a start then while your at it give the inlet a good cleen up and see how it goes. Should start first turn of the key 🙂

Yes I know. Done oil, filters andd plugs.
One thing I didnt buy the multi point plugs just the std single.
Ill have to get cleaning.

as long as they were at least platinums you'll be fine
