z20net tensioner for z22se engines

As you may know, the z20net tensioner shall be used when changing the timing chain on z22se engines.

Please find attached some pics comparing both tensioners. I read that the z20net one is supposed to be spring activated. However, I don't understand how it works, since the pin does not seem to be under pressure by any spring.

Does anybody know the real advantage of the z20net tensioner and how it actually works?

both vauxhall items. flat head is the z22se tensioner, the other one is from a z20net engine.

I think if you twist the spindle it adjusts it, although if anyone could shed any light on the best way to fit it it would be great as I'm trying to do one now.

I also notice there's no rubber o-ring on the z20net tensioner, is this a problem?

well, i twisted the spindle but that didn't change anything... so, how does this thing tension? does it need to be "activated" somehow? maybe mine is broken. dunno..

did you put weight onto it as you twisted it? thats how you open the z22se tensioner

z22se is spring loaded with oil pressure override once activated
z20net has a spring but is wholly dependant on oil pressure (similar principal to hydraulic tappets)

it's supposed to be the other way around. z22se tensioner dependant on oil pressure, whereas z20net one is spring loaded, right? :eh:

I fitted the Z20net tensioner a few months ago, could not find a way to activate and the chain was tight when fitted. I now have a chain rattle at cold sartup, stripped the egine yesterday to find that the tensioner had not adjusted from where it was set at install.

How do you activate this tensioner once installed? it has to be activated for the spring to take up the slack at cold start (no oil pressure), I did manage to activate it in my hand yesterday but there is no way to install once activated.

If I have no joy I am going to buy the other style.

Stick with the z22se one as its the balancer chain tentioner that is better if you swap it for a z20 net one :thumbup:

the z20net uses a sprung tensioner - works without oil pressure
the z22se uses an oil pressure/ spring tensioner - needs oil pressure

So does any one know how to activate the z20net tensioner?

if you take the NET tensioner apart you will find it too contains a spring adjuster the same as the SE, this needs to be activated otherwise the chain is not under tension when there is no oil pressure.

I have never seen a oil pressure only tensioner.

with the NET tensioner the only thing I am not sure what is the correct way to activate this spring, once the spring is activated the oil pressure is no longer required thus making this type of tensioner sprung adjuster.

Any ideas?

with the net one to activate the spring press it against the wall

I always fit the tensioner already activated. I submerge it in oil first and operate the plunger by hand to prime it.

Done a lot of chain changes this way and dont get rattle on first start up.
