removing crank pulley

hi all, im trying to take the crank pulley off so i can look at the condition of the timing chain, the cars wheels are on the floor, its in gear and yet the pulley still moves although i can feel there is pressure going against me,when trying to undo the nut is this normal? im turning the nut anti clock wise, i read on here that someone stook a screwdriver through the spokes of the pully to stop it moving in that ok to do? thanks

If its in gear with somone on the brakes it can be done you just need to keep winding the pressure on it until... BANG!

They take a fair bit of effort to undo so dont be scared of swinging on the end of a breaker bar!

I wouldt put something to jam the pulley you could do some damage 🙁

I had 3 10inch extention bars and a 4foot breaker bar with an axle stand to hold it up strait :thumbup:

thanks for the reply, i waqs able to undo it using a rachet with a long socket on the end with a short extension bar in the socket, my extension bar was too long, like with everything, the first time you are unsure and dont want to break anything, everything is off ready to take off the cam cover, will post pics in a while,

well ive taken the cover off, the chain has the coloured liks, so im right to think its a new chain, also the oil nozzle has the larger hole, the problem that i can see is that the chain is loose on the tensioner side iof the crank cog, i know the tensioner is oil fed but it is REALLY loose, ive got pics but not sure how to upload, last time i just attached from my hard drive, is it possible that the tensioner is in 'idle mode' is it safe to take it out and look? btw the cam cover is still on, would that cause a problem when taking out the tensioner

Thats not good was the tentioner fitted properly? as you have to set it first then screw it in the head and then push back on the guide to let it go. if that makes sense?

Thats the new oil jet wich is the one you want :thumbup: the old ones had a metal insert in the hole.

i dont know if it was fitted correctly, not long had the car, i was told that the engine had been rebuilt but had no receipt for the chain so i wanted to be sure, looking at it the new chain and tensioner has been fitted but not correctly! is it ok just to unscrew the tensioner to look? or best to push on the chain guild to try and activate the tensioner

i just rocked the guide back and forth, only a couple of mm, i dont think that the tensioner is activated?! (i rocked the one circled)

Take it out and make sure it works properly then see what happens when you put it back in if it takes up the tention and theres no slack in the chain then happy days but if there is still slack in it bin the lot and start again with new timing chain.

when taking the tensioner out, am i to expect it to release from the engine with force?

Judging by the slack in the chain no but put your hand behind it just incase. It wont fire out or anything extream! Well shouldnt do :lol:

well its out, i dont think it has been activated!

I think your rite. Push down on it ind see what happens it wont fly out or anything silly but will have some pressure in it.

If it works nice and smoothly and as it should pre load it pop it back in and release it and see what your chains like. if its been like that for a while it could have done some damage dunno.. or it might go nice and tight and be a cheep fix!

well ive disengaged it, the picture show
1- the two parts
2- the parts placed in each other
3- the part pushed togther with little force
4- using alot of force
does this look ok? is it better to fit the tensioner with the tensiion already in, read somewhere on here

You can fit it with it already activated just make sure the cutout in the end engages wth the guide corectly :thumbup:

ive fitted back, the chain is soo much tighter, i cant believe how close i was to having another engine, the chap who fitted it was a' trained machanic' at what i dont know thou!

how do you make sure that it is connected to the guide rail? i cant see where it connects, i thought that the slots would engage as i screwed it in?

everything back on, apart from airfilter, need to weld lug back on! then going to double check everything then give it a turn over, fingers crossed,
