Remap or tuning box???

hi guys,
I been looking into boosting the bhp on my astra 1.9 cdti, a few posts on here have advised me to look for a tuning box on ebay, they start off at £70ish up to about £400. i nearly bought 1 this morn from italy and i thought i would do my home work on em first. i went to my local tuning specialist and he said they are crap really. they are quite universal and are not mapped to the indervidual spec of the car? his view was that they just fool the ecu into thinking the engine needs more power which results in the engine constantly running hot and it creates problems with air flow valves, fuel controll valves etc. this is all a bit german to me!!! he wanted to sell me the "evolution chip remapp package" 150>180bhp / 40>55nm and 20% guaranteed fuel saving, 7day money back guarantee, lifetime guaratee ( if the software was upgraded by vx in a service or recal then they keep a copy of the remap and will redo it for free) all for a golden price of £359

now seen as i was prepaired to pay up to £100 this morn for a foreign tuning box, he gave me the low down on em and its thrown me a bit as i aint got £350 to spend atm...

some advice on the tuning box from the users rather than the salesmen would be glady accepted please fellas.

All the people who sell remaps say tuning boxes are crap. They are going to as well, as it's competition for them.

I ran one with no issues, vocky has been running one for 70,000 miles with no issues.

They don't run hotter at all, mine ran at the exact same temerature with the box fitted or not.

I can personally recommend DTUK for the eco 3 box.

If you become a club member on AON, and pay £10 for the year, you get quite a big discount

Go for a reputable company for tuning boxes like DTUK. They have a proven track record and as Matt has said, he had one with no problems and great results. They are priced as they are because they are very good.

Stay away from the eBay boxes! I work with a chap that but £70 box on his Audi A4 Quattro and it cost him nearly £1000 to have his ECU sorted.

There is a dtuk eco3 box that matt suggested on ebay atm, second hand, its off a 2006 astra so i asuume its 3 yrs old £150 bin or bo. is it worth getting a 3yr old 2nd hand 1 or do i not chance it spend the extra £100 4a new 1?

The box itself won't be 3 year old, my Vectra was a 2005 model, and I got the box in August 2008.

Second hand it OK, but for an extra £70 I'd get a brand new one, as you get 3 year warranty with the box from Andrew @ DTUK, which includes 24/7 phone support. Second hand boxes come with no warranty.

a remap is better but certainly the tuning box is almost as good

as Matt said above mine has been thrashed to within a mm of it's life for 70k and it still has given no side effects :clap:

thanks for the input guys :thumbup: Im not in a postion to spend £350 on getting it remapped so i thinks it the dtuk eco 3 at the end of the month when my pay check arrives.
