Down to EARTH

Hi, 2.2 fans, got mucky this weekend and thought all my problems would be solved....
a nice new alternator fitted to my Vectra ( 4 spanner rating in the Haynes manual yippee! ) and.......

still giving me trouble.

Crusing along quite happily, turn on the fan / rear window heater / lights / aircon / washer jets, it`s like having an instant rev limiter put on the car, it looses all power, turn the eg. fan off and the car pulls like a beast again.

This has been a fault I think! for a while now...... I never put it down to electrics though due to my management light coming on and the Tech2 giving Lambda sensor glitches, .....but has progressively been getting worse....almost to the point that if I need to go out at night Ill have to take to wifes motor.

Has anyone experianced this kind of problem, the battery seems to store and pump out the correct voltages, so I`m suspecting a dodgy EARTH somewhere.

check the engine earth strap and that the battery terminals are not corroded by removing them and giving them a clean

That is bizarre, I did have a similar problem with a MK4 Astravan a few years back, it was the battery breaking down internally, but only when under sustained load. So when you test it it is fine but breaks down with all the load on it. Try changing the battery, they are not expensive, around £50. Try Vauxhall dealer, usually cheaper than Halfords.

thanks guys, looking through the manual, and it looks like E1 earth strap, to the front left strut is my sucker should your info on the battery and leads not be the problem.

Can`t get over what a great site this is, not been a member long but got some great information.

Just coming up to a week now, took your advice and went for a simple battery change, £40 for an up-rated item......

......the car must have never been running right as it drives like a dream now, cant fault it. Just wish the engine management light hadnt come on and I could have sorted this earlier.....the money I must have spent on fault diagnosis could have easily covered a new GSI front end, even a set of alloys.

Still....back to loving the car again, so out with the polish and maybe post a few pics.............thanks again. hail..

Glad you got it fixed, just goes to show that it is worth checking the items we all take for granted. Why is it we all assume a fault is with a sensor or something like that ?????

we got an eml light and an exhaust emission light...my eml lights comes on every now and them,got a fault with the cruise control part of the brake light switch..
