tapping/ticking sound

just lately the car has been making a ticking sound at idle. but now and again (completely randomly), it sounds like the exhuast is blowing on the motorway, then when i pull in to check it i turn the engine off. then when i turn it on again after a few mintutes, it seems to be fine. the engine has done 63,000 miles.

should be able to smell exhaust fumes if u sit in car for a few minutes at idle

manifold or downpipe leak gets sucked into cabin straight away from my experience in the vec

come to think of it i have smelled burning once or twice when driving through wierd places. hmmmmmmm this could be it.

i had this on mine last yr same tapping/ticting sound had it looked at and it needed a new exhaust manifold

Why is it the exhaust manifolds dont last on the z22se engines??? Im on my third now and ive done 117k! However im looking to get the manifold from courtenay so hopefully that WILL last the life of the car!!

the precat in the downpipe causes the manifold to crack over time 🙁

One of my O2 sensors wasnt screwed in properly or came loose when i took the pre cat out and that was what made a vibration/ticking/rattling noise

i have the precat removed. im still in germany so cant physically check the car at the minute but would people say its most likely to be exhaust manifold cracked?

I have exactly the same issue with my car, getting an after-market manifold fitted.
No idea what you guys get charged for part's but here in S.A. GM charges the equivalent of £ 370 just for the manifold ex fitting, and I can get a decent mandrel-bent 4 into 1 fitted for the equivalent of £ 100.
Having it done this weekend, and since I am not certain how badly it's leaking I am taking it easy as I don't want to end up burning a valve.

So had it done yesterday, apologies for the crappy cell pics.

Problem is the heat shield over the one inner CV is touching it now... would it be safe to remove or should I rather make another plan?
