Engine Whining

I've lived with this for the past 6 months but I've decided needs sorting lol.

Basically, the engine whines when the revs are increased. I've taken the aux belt off and it still does it so its not the alternator, tensioner or air con pump. Could my timing chain be too tight somehow? Or any ideas what this could be?

Or is this just how they sound!?

My vec C does this , but disappears after a few miles and has done since I bought it 18 months ago, had it into a couple of vx dealers and they couldn't find anything wrong, just told me it's normal, still don't believe that but hey what do you do!! hasn't got any worse so maybe it is normal!!

I've got such sound on the cold start. It lasts for 10 seconds or something ....

if it isn't the auxillary drive belt then get the chain checked asap

ive just finished rebuilding mine with 2 new chain kits and mine does it.

it really bugs me tho so im going to look into it to see if i can find what it is....

Now weathers picking up I'm going to try and get to the bottom of this!! I dont see what could whine on the cam timing chain, don't see how its possible for it to be fitted wrong or too tight? I did it myself last year and checked it loads of times to make sure it was correct!! As original post, I've taken the aux belt off and it still does it so the other thing I can possibly think of is maybe the water pump or the balance shafts? Do they whine when they're getting on a bit? I've noticed that the water pump is leaking oil a bit.. I've got a new waterpump here but before I order the sprocket locking tool I just want to check any other thoughts.

most likely the oil pump if it does it on a cold start

notorious on the x20xev engines with the one way valve on the block

Does it all the time whether hot or cold, whine increases with engine speed. Honestly don't think its the oil pump though.
