N2O Questions....

Hey,

I'm a newbie to nitrous oxide, but I've been reading up about it recently.
Does anyone know how well the standard 2.2 engine stands up to say, a 75hp shot?
What kind of things generally go wrong with the 2001 vectra and break when this amount of additional power is made?

If anyone has any first hand experience, it would be great to get your views and opinions.

yeh NOS is for people who dont mind thrashing the tits off a car knowing the engine will give in within months

if you dont mind killing you 2.2 and rebuilding it then go ahead buddy 🙂

Out of interest, what stuff do the FI guys have to upgrade to handle their extra hp?

Rods first on FI. NOS hammers a bottom end so I'd guess you'd have the same issue. Have a search for burgerman for DIY NOS. I've tried it and its a bit addictive and runs out quick. I'd say more one for the strip than the street but each to their own.

250bhp safe limit. I'm running just over that at 263bhp @ 6400rpm and i'm on standard rods but it is NOT advisable to go over this without upgrading.

I don't rev my engine up in the regions of over 6000rpm very often so i'm okay for now.

Wow, they're not that weak then. I wouldn't push it that far, but a 50hp shot is starting to sound tempting.
Did you upgrade anything else to handle the power hike Johnny?

My cylinder head has been ported and I have Schrick cams and double valve springs. The exhaust has been changed for a dBilas 4-1 manifold, Courtenay 2.5" S/S custom downpipe, 200cpi sport cat and a 2.5" Milltek catback system. Other than that i'm on OE rods, pistons and crank.

Mark Watts at Courtenay has his Astra with Stage 2 SC also and he's running OE cams etc, pistons and rods and he's producing 250bhp all day long with no problems. He uses his as a daily driver and track car too. He classes himself as a rather 'spirited' driver too.

The initial responces on vvoc were the 2.2 was a chocolate bottom block that would blow. You guys are driving proof otherwise :thumbup:

I'd love to go the SC route, but cant justify the expense (more like SWMBO won't let me :roll: )

the z22se bottom end is quite strong really, General Motors advise to upgrade at the following bhp;

the rods at 250 bhp
the pistons 300 bhp
the cylinder liners 400 bhp
the crank and head gasket 500 bhp
z22se cylinder head 900 bhp (saab good for 1400 bhp)
the block 1000 bhp
the oil pump 1200 bhp
timing chain guides 1400 bhp, yes 1400 bhp :wtf:

Buggeration!!! I never knew the z22se head could take that much let alone the other components!! I was aware of the piston/rods but blimey!

just by changing the rods and pistons the z22se can take 400 bhp easily and with new cylinder liners 500 bhp all day long :clap:

also in the states some owners 'tune' their ecu and then rev the standard engine to 8500 rpm :wtf:

ps: 1400 bhp is what GM can get from the engine, who said the z22se is chocolate 😃

I think like already mentioned over on VVOC, you may find difficulty in obtaining insurance at a respectable level if at all. Its not down to the power increase but more that fact that you are carrying a time bomb in the boot!

Is it even legal to have it "armed" while on UK roads? I've read previously that you can have it fitted, but not activated.

A) The legality of nitrous use on the road varies from country to country, even within the EU. However, contrary to what many people believe (including some police officers) nitrous oxide injection is legal for road use in the UK and many other countries (just as are turbo chargers and superchargers). According to the Ministry of Transport, the Highway Code and the MOT handbook there is no law prohibiting the use of nitrous injection. However just as with any tuning modification, the owner must inform their insurance company and obtain adequate cover otherwise any performance modification would be illegal. Therefore the only way you will break the law by having your street car fitted with a nitrous kit in the UK, is if you fail to inform your insurance company that you have one. Insuring a nitrous injected vehicle has become easier since WON joined forces with Adrian Flux to provide all their customers with a better chance of obtaining adequate insurance cover. Some other insurance companies such as Greenlight Insurance also offer cover for nitrous equipped cars.

There is a degree of confusion over the need to have a hazard warning sticker on the outside of the car. We previously explained that nitrous oxide is neither a flammable nor a hazardous gas but it is an oxidiser. There is a legal requirement for commercial vehicles to display a suitable sticker but this does not apply to private vehicles, which are not even obliged to display a green compressed gas sticker. However, displaying such a warning sticker might well be advantageous to you and the emergency services if you were to be involved in any kind of accident, as this would inform them that you were carrying a container of compressed oxidiser.
