All back together now, refilled with oil and coolant. Double checked everything and turned the key.....

Flat as a pancake.

On charge for an hour or so.

She's a runner...

Slight coolant leak which I've put down to me not putting the clip on the top hose (D'oh!).

Got a "suck of air" when giving it throttle.

I've seen it on the forums somewhere so will take a look now.

Yep, a 5 mile gentle drive and she seems fine.

I was consemplating about the 2.4 manifold whilst it was in bits, didn't want to spend anymore than I needed to though.

Something to think about for the future.

It turned over once and then the battery went flat. The radiator fan cut in (which had my head scratching).

All seems fine now. Took a few miles to clear the exhaust out. Alot of water did go down the bores. I got most of it out but now she's running like a dream.

No evidence of any leaks anywhere. Especially where the cracks have been welded.

All in all quite happy at the result.

Next week I'll do an oil and filter change and put a new set of plugs in.

Good news!! Well done you! Regarding the 2.4 inlet, if you can live with a drop in torque and put up with revving the bollocks off the car then fit it. My advice would be to leave the OE inlet in place unless you plan any further big mods later.

I like the fact that my car is pretty much standard.

Am leaving work to drive home now. Another 5 / 6 miles should flag up any problems.

Cleared my tools up earlier and had a tidy up. Threw the old exhaust manifold out and the gasket fell off (manifold/down pipe). This rather pissed me off as I could have sworn there wasn't one on there so I never fitted a new one. It's gone back together without one. The downpipe looked like it had a flange in the centre so I didn't think anymore of it.

Suprisingly it's not blowing, but I'll do it next week when I drop the oil.

Those gaskets vary from dealer to dealer. Some have old stock which are like card/metallic gaskets and some stock the new laminated stainless steel gaskets. Both will do the same job.

It's a 1999 2.5 diesel (non turbo)

It was backfiring and popping through the air filter box. It has occasionally missed before but it has a tendancy to clear after a while.

I took the rocker cover off and found a broken valve spring on the inlet valve on pot number 1. I took the head off and stripped it down but all valves seem OK. Chambers 1, 2 and 3 are coated in oil / fuel and number 4 is clean.

I haven't taken the belt cover off yet, but I can get my fingers behind it and feel the belt is loose. I'm now wondering if the belt has jumped putting the timing out?

very rare for that engine to cause any valve damage...usually just bends the push rods and maybe snap a rocker or 2.

I noticed you mentioned about your cracked exhaust manifold. Ive had 2 so far and im on my third now! I was wondering if there is anyone out there that knows of a custom exhaust manifold (maybe 4-2-1) that I can fit save me having to wait 3 months every time the bloody thing crackes

Hi Daz

It broke one valve spring and two rockers.

Start grinding valves back in and noticed three cracks around the inlet seats.

Head scrapped and new one on its way.

Not sure about the 4 branch manifold. Wouldn't like to fit one if personally. LOL

Have you checked all your engine mounts? Something not right there.

Just an update on my head. 100 miles on and done an oil and filter change. Everything seems OK so thats the job finished. Thanks for everyones help with my rebuild, in partucular Vocky, Matt, JohnnyN, Vectra2k9, BURT150 and MikeS.

Did any of you VX220 drivers go to Bedford Autodrome for a VX day 5 / 6 years ago?
