Vectra Paperclip test & Wheezing noise?

Hi,

I'm after some advice on my bro's Vectra B 2.2 SRi 150, 64,000 Miles.

Please forgive any dumb question, with the snow I've not had a chance to have a good nose around it! Have searched forums but SO many conflicting answers & suggestions.

Theres a constant "wheezing" sound, coming from the top right side of the engine, cant hear it when driven, only with the bonnet up, I've had the briefest of looks but couldnt identify the source, sound this normal for a z22 or should I look deeper for some sort of leak or???

Drinks oil - 2litres a month approx 1000 miles (no oil leak under car) - yikes! Doesnt smoke noticeably when driven, but have not followed the car to confirm, yet. It had the cam chain let go & a £1500 repair, (@ last owners cost ha ha) but I understand botched repairs can subsequently cause high oil consumption? Anything SIMPLE to remedy?

The paper clip test wont work on the vectra b's its a case of going to a garage to get it diagnosed or borrow a reader from someone. That'l probably point you nearly in the right direction.

These engines generaly use a bit of oil. I use about a liter every fortnight (400 miles). It'l be one of two things. Piston rings will smoke all the time and valve stem seals will smoke at high revs.

The whining noise on the top right hand side of the engine might be the power steering pump as its run off the end of the camshaft (gearbox end) They normally make a noise so if it is that i wouldnt worry.

The paper clip test doesn't work as stated above and will fry your ECU if you fanny about.

The whizzing noise from the top right is the power steering pump working. There have been reports of excessive oil use once the engine has had work carried out after cam chain failure.

Maybe worth carrying out a compression test?

am now happy the wheezing is as you say the pas pump, phew, Also to me the gearchanges feel a bit "tight" sometimes, 1st 2nd and 3rd??

I think if its the emitions light it'l more than likely be the cat or o2 sensor.

Gear changes are a bit tight in first and second for me too (worse cold). Itl be eather selecter cables worn or need ajusting or top your box up with oil.

I have heard that vauxhall started over filling them by half a liter to reduce the problem?

Someone will put me right if im talking sh**e dunno..

I am sure i also heard somthing about the amount of oil used in the box been changed sure there will be a field remedy some where.

As for oil use, as said these engines do tend to use oil esp after a cam chain failure and then fix, as said it may be rings or stem valve seals or Valve guides.

First gear selecton is normally hard in cold weather.

Get a code reader on it and i am sure it will point to a O2 sensor.
