Cam chain noise

Hello,

I have already asked about the cam chain problem, now i have an other question.

When i start my car in the morning in the freezing cold, for 2 seconds it sounds like an diesl engine.

Is this the chain slacking, or just the tensioner getting in place?

Does some one have an link how cam chain problem sounds like? Like a youtube clip or something.

loose chain i would say as mine done that and eventually snapped

If the chain goes slack you normaly hear a metalic scraping noise. I had that problem with my balancer chain and tentioner.

If its missing on cold start it could be coil pack, spark plugs or another fault.

doesnt have to be a chain guys if it sounds only for few seconds 🙂
it's probaly hydraulic lifters mate,they sounds like diesel engine when oil is cold,when they worn
I have it in mine, chain new,tensioner etc new - lifters after warming up sounds like diesel 😃

Yeah its only for 2 seconds, and it exactly sounds like a diesel engine. Then it goes a way.

Are there any other symphtons that could make it more clear if it is the chain.

Because this is cam chain thing is keeping me worried, if it is or not slacking.

what milage You have mate?
cam chain engine need a while to stop noise in the start coz oil has to start working in chamber
maybe tensioner needs to be replaced?
mine did some noise in start and I had to do piston rings so I decided to change it ( 101000 miles)

I would advise you to get the chain checked, but the exhaust manifold can crack and cause a similar noise

My car is at 165000 K (100000 miles).

that is the maximum mileage for the chain kits, get both replaced.

I thought that chain kits could go on for ever, my previous car an nissan with chain had 26000 miles on it and still went on. bmw and mercedes dont replace there chains, very rare.

100k intervals for both chains. But, as we all know you are gambling your engine if you have no evidence of the chain kit being replaced for the new style kit with the improved oil jet.

have read some where that engines till number 11065400 did not get an mod, an the numbers higher did get it.

My engine number is 11099528, so i have the later cam chain kit fitted right?

So should i changed the chains?

100k is the safe life of a chain, and this applies to the new kits aswell. The only reason that people have been changing chain kits before 100k is because it had the old jet. There have been a few cases of the newer engines with chain failures coming to the surface in the last few months. The best advice is to make sure you change the oil at 5000 mile intervals.

If you are at 100k now then change the chain kit.

Thanks for the advice, i will change the chain after new year.

But is a 5000 mile oil interval not a short one? thats a 200 gbp oil (using castrol edge) change every year if you do 15000 miles a year, isnt that a little bit steep?

10,000 mile or 16,000 Km oil changes if you do a high mileage

never run to 20,000 miles, it's just not good for the chain

Today i got my chain replaced with the gears, as wel as the balancer. The mech said that it already had a change, but he could not see if they replaced all of the stuff or just the chain and the oil jet.

The cam chain whas 4 mm longer than the new one, so i wonder did i realy needed the change?

I would say its the hydraulic lifters as mine done the same noise for a few seconds then disappeared. I had mine done under the network Q warranty thou. Just had to suffer with a bloody Citroen C2 for 2 whole days AAARRRGGGGHHHHHHH! And it was a bloody automatic with flappy paddles tut!

I have listened to the above youtube clip and it sounds exactly like my engine on start up and occasionally occurs throughout the journey but it doesnt always do it? If the chain is on the way out would it not do it all the time? Any ideas then if that is the noise when a timing chain is going?

if yours sounds like the utube link above then replace your timing chain
