Build your own pc?

As above im playing with idea to build my own pc. Never done it before but love a chalenge 😃

What i need is a half decent tower with a fast ish proccesor with plenty of ram a good size H/D

And all the other other gubins. Ive had a bit of a look round the net and cant decide what to get

and im not all that clued up on what bits are the best for me 🙁

I dont realy need a mega powerfull pc for gaming cus ive got a 360 for that so its only realy used for the net/Photoshop/and all your other bits and peices.

Can anyone let me know what sort of bits i need and mabye list them for me?

ive just got myself this to replace my 5 year old dell.... all i had to do was fit a hard drive and it was away to go..

it's a lot easier than you might think.. very hard to get it wrong 🙂 Let me know if you want me to look at any particular parts and I'll tell u if theyre good 🙂

That looks like a good bit of kit you. Trouble is i cant realy spend that much in one hit so ill be getting it bit by bit per week sort of thing.

Thanks bud that'l help loads :thumbup: . What sort of processor should i go for? i found these:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ (3GHz) Socket AM2 L2 2MB (2 x 1MB) Cache OEM Processor £50

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8 GHz Processor £75

or would it be best to go for a bundle with the mother board?

Thats a big argument ive seen quite alot over intel or amd. The thing that made me look at amds is there alot cheaper then the equivilant intel. but then i spose you get what you pay for :thumbup:

AMD have always been renound as cheaper CPU's than intel, the simple fact is that Intel cores have been far superior and better built since the age of the PC

I can only remember the socket 7 and socket A amd chips having the edge over intel for small periods of time

they are also considered cheaper components and more likely to fail than Intel's

the socket A amd chips were always failing and were always prone to popping when playing around with em

I remember doing an experiment with a P4 socket 478 chip and socket A xp chip and the P4 would power up for say 5 -10 seconds without a heatsink whereas the XP chip would pop instantly, says a lot about em imo

I am also a Intel person although have owned a few AMD's they just dont seem as stable.

Update on my pc build. Im nearly there now 😃

Bits so far:

Arianet case in black and silver.
500w psu
DVD rewriter
60gb harddrive
500gb sata harddrive
Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2l M/B

All of wich is wired in just got Processer , fan and heat sink, RAM and mayby a graphics card to get. sorted 🙂

Good work not long to go now, Did you manage to wire up all the front leds and power connections ok?

Thanks mate :thumbup: Yea I think that was the only thing i had to look in the motherboard manual for. I nearly had to get a magnifying glass to see what the pin out markings were on the M/B. Bit fiddly but was carefull about it and its all plugged in where it should be so all good.

as for heatsink m8 get an artic freezer pro 7, best pound for pound cooler on market, about 25% drop in temps

get a quad core cpu but perhaps your psu wont handle it

Thanks mike. Its going to be a 2.8/3.0ghz core 2 duo i think with 4gb of ram. That'l be enough for what ill be doing with it.

It's not going to be used for games so im never going to wind it up enough to warent getting a quad core Plus i could always upgrade to that next year 😃

4gb is more than enough

512mb of ram on xp is more than enough if u have a decent size hard drive

i am afraid since vista was launched everyone thinks gb's of RAM is the way forward

Oh rite so Vista's a bit of a ram drainer then? Ill be using xp pro or i might be able to get hold of windows 7 but its leaning more towards xp.

one of the biggest problems in the last 3 years with HP laptops was Vista. and of course being HP they dont support downgrading OS lol
