Performance Timing Chain

Hi All,

Seeing as chain snaps are common with these engines I was wondering if there is such a thing as Performance Chain kits for our engines? I know the OE ones will work just fine but surely a double row timing chain will be heaps better that OE???????

With all the mods that we all do I’m guessing that at high RPMs the chain is more subject to whip and stretch whereas a double row billet setup for example, would be far more resistant to whip and stretch and will ensure your cam timing remains.

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, having said all that....................do these chains exist for the Z22SE's...............if so, don’t be shy to advise accordingly 😃

it was never about the chains, it was the components around them that failed

mostly to do with the the oil jet and tensioner revolving around lack of lubrication and stretching

pm benny if your concerned about using OE chains as no doubt he has seen every scenario as to why they fail

Not so much concerned about using OE chains or components, as stated in my post, but more just a general thought about performance chains and peoples thoughts in general.

Also, I’m going to venture a guess and say that if there are in fact performance chains for the Z22SE's, I’m sure the other components that come with it are also going to be somewhat better than OE. For example one thing that comes to mind would be the hardening of the teeth of the crank sockets and gears. Surely there will also be an oil/lubrication benefit as well.

I have never heard of any performance / upgraded chain kit apart from the OE one. As said the main modification to these new kits was the oil jet having a bigger hole.

But i would have thought that any larger hole could still get blocked.

the z20net chain kit is better, but it's not a performance kit

the chain tensioner doesn't use oil pressure like the z22se, so even if there is no oil pressure the chain is still tensioned

But.............can you not just buy the tensioner from the z20NET and fit it to the z22se?

That could be a good mod for allot of z22se owners. If the tentioner can hold its own without the need of oil pressure that would realy put your mind at rest?

Tensioners can be bought seperate anyway. The kit only becomes a kit once its all in a box together after the dealer has picked all the individual products! lol!

but if you get the normal 2.2 kit then you have to get the
tentioner separate more ££ ? or is it not cheaper getting all the
main parts in a kit ? knowing Vaux (Backwards) its prob cheaper
getting the bits individually :lol:

How does the price compare to the Z22SE one? although if you oil pressure is that low you've got big problems anyway.

autovaux will sell them, z20net chain kit, similar price to the z22se kit

That's really handy, thanks 🙂 Good to know if someone accidentally puts the Z22SE tensioner in a Z20NET head, it may not have the oil pressure to tension the chain correctly :o

I guess this is the tensioner in the big tensioner plug? Is there any visible difference? (I'm just wondering if it is in my LE5)

(a bit off topic, but did anyone ever produce a shortened chain kit for the balance shafts? If i'm going to do it I'd prefer that to keeping the balance shaft sprockets).

I investigated cam chains a while ago for a different engine. There are different grades available as well as going duplex or triplex. Reynolds are a good manufacturer of chains. You do need to be absolutely certain of the link dimension though. Theres an imperial one (3/8 I think dunno.. ) and a metric one (9 mm??? dunno.. ) which will interchange but the slight difference causes rapid wear on the sprockets :thumbdown: . Might be worth a look if your interested.
