Did I do the EGR thing right?

Hey,

Just read a couple of other threads on here, and now I'm not so sure....

Basicly, I pulled the EGR pipe off the front, put back the rubber ring, 10p + 2p, added the clip. Now I've seen where someone put some paste over to secure it. Will my 2+10 p block hold up? Or should I just get one of these vw plugs I've since read about?

Also the other end of the same pipe, I just made a block off plate, and added it between the gasket and the flange that I cut off the pipe, so that my bracket still went on okay.
Is that an okay way to block off the EGR, and does the EGR pump not keep putting lots of pressure onto the block off?

first question you asked

start your car up and feel around the clip area for any suction, this will show up any leaks

the second question is a bit more difficult, if you have not blanked off the egr using a blanking plate and cheater then yes exhaust gases[hot] will flow through the EGR valve, through the head and then be faced with your blanking plate bolted on using the existing flange, firstly do you think your gasket will handle high temperature gases?, are you sure it will not start to leak when being in contact with high temp gases

look in the club shop for a cheater then go down your local dealership for a blanking plate [ around £4 ]

Hey Mike, thanks for your reply.
I did ask at my local Vauxhall garage for a blanking plate, but they didn't know what I was on about, even when I gave them the part number!? So I ended up making one myself. If my blanking plate holds back the gases, will not having the cheater cause my EGR system to keep building up pressure?

it is worth getting a blanking plate tbh m8 as u dont want hot gases sitting inside the head, imo you be better off blocking it off at the egr valve before the gases enter the head

use this part number

I kind of understand what your saying mike but if the normal flow of gasses is blocked then that's it.there will be no hot gasses flowing through the head, possibly carbon build up around the inner edge of the egr inlet(manifold side) plus the gasses normally flow Through the head so it should be able to cope with the heat.

my mates had loads of problems with the EGR valve but hers is only
a 1.6 astra mk4 dont think there's a cheat for that tho notsure.gif
cost a fortune on replacement n diagnostic think its started playing up again

but how can u guarantee an air tight seal on the inlet manifold side concerning the head, would you chance that ?, hence why i suggested he use a blanking plate rather than block it off that way

even the slightest leak will allow gases to pass through the head and personally i would block the gases off before they reach the head, you will also find that blocking off the EGR your engine will run slightly hotter than before

I'm not saying block it at the inlet manifold I'm saying block it where the egr pipe leaves the head, you can use a steel gasket/blank and bolt the egr pipe back over it, that way it looks oe and you don't have to disturb the egr valve.

the purpose of the "howto" was for the other member mark

if you want to make it look oe then why not just block the hole inbetween the EGR sensor and mounting surface [obviously not the hole where the EGR sensor operates ] 🙂

i wouldn't recommend blocking it off at the head purely cos it is aluminium, it would be more practical using the mounting surface for the EGR sensor

u can cut out the bottom of a tin can to cover that hole and just bolt down the EGR sensor over it

the other thing u have to ask yourself is the pressure from the inlet manifold, some 4 pounds per square inch of pressure being put on that gasket at idle and rising to 11 pounds per square inch at high revs, with the EGR valve opening then the pressure vacuum is sucking up the particulate matter and hydrocarbons from the exhaust, where they go mixed with engine vapour is another story :crazy:
