Hi,

I recently bought a 2001 2.2 vectra sri.
I've ported and polished the TB, done the 3 pipe mod, ( + extended pipes) and done some weight reduction.

I will block off EGR, and remove the pre cat, and when the time comes, replace the entire exhaust with a performance system.

What other mods can I do on a BUDGET to improve engin or suspension?

piper cams are a good mod, so is their 4-1 exhaust manifold

panel filter works very well too

350 for piper manifold

The cams and manifold are more than I can afford really, how much bhp is the filter worth?
Anything else a bit cheaper that's worth doing I could look into?

Also, I asked at the vx dealership about the EGR blanking plates (pn 24575592), and they have never herd of it notsure.gif Not a problem, I'll make my own, but I'm still not sure where the EGR is located, some help please.....

cams add about 10 bhp

the 4-1 exhaust manifold adds about 7-8 bhp

I'll grab myself a K&N filter, does it offer much bhp ?
Is there something else more in my price range that would help performance?

the egr valve is located at the back rigth hand corner top of the engine,
and also has a aperature you may want to blank off where the pipe goes from the head to the inlet manifold, where the front right plastic engine cover bracket attaches.

I guessed that might be it, but wanted to be sure, I just couldn't tell from the pics I'd seen.

So what else performance wise can I do on a budget ??

I know this isn't budget, but hope someone can give me ball park figure: What sort of bhp gains could I expect from a supercharger or turbo set up, and roughly how much would one cost?

supercharger approx cost £______ = ____extra bhp

turbo approx cost £______ = ____extra bhp

I'm a fairly capable DIYer home mechanic type guy......

theory being you could get a turbo manifolds & associated parts from the z20net or saab b307 (the engine im currently trying to put in mine) and it'll fit reet on :thumbup: dunno how you'd run the engine managment tho :thumbdown:
pick a whole engine up for less than 800 squids
dunno so much about superchargers tho....

well it all depends on what happens with the ecu/wiring issues and loss of hair im about to suffer,

the z20net puts out around 175bhp and 200nm @2500 revs i chose the engine because the engine layout would be the same and bar a few thermostat housing issues my gearbox fits,
with bsr stage 1, which if i stick with stock ecu i will be getting it would run up to 220bhp and bucket loads of torque,
however i dunno if we'll get that to work yet,
with standalone i suppose the limit is somewhere before the engine melts!
it just seemed a lot cheaper than turbo kits and superchargers as the theory being once we overcome ecu/imobiliser issues it will already be set up and running at a fraction of the price. :thumbup:

That all sounds a bit involved for me though, I guess there aren't any other cheap engine improvement mods I can do....?

Supercharger really as much as that! :shock:

It's a good bhp gain, but I really can't justify spending that much on my car, the supercharger would be worth over twice what my car is :lol:
With the amount of custom fab work for the turbo, I guess it's going to be around the same sort of ball park figure, maybe less, but more work.

I could of justified spending £1k if the gains were the same, thought I should enquire at least...

So are there any other cheap performance mods under £150 worth me looking into?

Buy a secondhand charger and inlet manifold from US eBay /CobaltSS.net and it can be done for a lot less, if you're prepared to do the work and take the risk. A stage 1 SC conversion will give you 210-220bhp and won't require a charge cooler. A few people on here and vx220.org.uk have managed to pick up both for around the £500 mark. Lot's of other odds and sods needed, plus you'll need to send your ECU off to Courtenay's for a new map but it can be done on a budget.

I paid nearly £6500. You don't need to remove the head to fit a decompression plate on the new conversions so there is a saving in labour and parts costs. The seperate boost ECU is not required now either. The injectors are uprated and the OE Delphi ECU can be programmed for the extra fuelling required.

A Stage 1 conversion as mentioned above comes in at around £3500 if fitted at Courtenay Sport. Click my signature and have a look under tuning, sc conversion.

I'm not prepared to spend that sort of money, or do lots of messing around to get parts and fit them.
This is just a dd I'm looking to make a tad faster on a budget.
As I say, if there was an <u>easy</u> 60 bhp for under 1 k I'd probably get stuck in and fork out.
