I'm after some advice - I know there are a few sparkies on here.....

The electric system in my house has been deemed unsafe by the bloke who came to fix my washing machine yesterday (he has to do a routine check of the plug that I use to plug my machine into). Apparently it's not earthed properly (the machine he used to test should have shown 3.3, but it actually showed over 200).

I had an electrician round last night whom I think was trying to diddle me. He said that he HAD to install an extractor fan in my bathroom by law if he was re-wiring, and he HAD to install mains smoke alarms by law also (he wouldn't have even mentioned smoke alarms had I not done so). Also, he never asked to see where my electricity meter was. Can someone in the trade please confirm if this is true?

Also, if anyone lives near Sheffield and wants to come and quote me for a total re-wire, please feel free to contact me by private message.

Any advice is much appreciated.

yes and yes, when our neighbours house was modernised last month they had to have extractor fans in the bathroom and kitchen, and mains powered smoke detectors cus my neighbour was moaning about the walls being dug out then the crap re-plastering job.

My girlfriend is having some electrical work done on her building, and those electricians say it's only 'recommended', not essential and that a lot of electricians try and take advantage and say it's a legal requirement so they can charge more money.

Someone ain't telling the truth!
