Puff of Air - Answer Revealed!

Well guys took the car to my mates garage he opened up the bonnet while I stayed in the car, I turned off the ignition and then there was the famous sound!

He said it was to do with the air induction and probably caused by the K&N Induction kit. He actually recommended putting it back to standard...

Here are pics of my induction, can anyone please tell me is this setup correctly? and if it is not what is missing or what needs changing?

He also stated that idle (tickover) is probably not as sweet as it should be, which I think I agree with as she is stable etc but in all honesty it could feel a bit better.

Your thoughts please guys and recommendations 😉

ps. I have a vectra c, 2.2 sri (03)

I could be wrong, but is that a MAF sensor next to the airfilter? Usually they don't like filters which have to be oiled (usually cotton). If it is, could be that your MAF is breaking down. Didn't know they made the 2.2 with a MAF though.. Must be a different ECU then too?

it is hot air being sucked in m8 and she is overfueling at idle

every vectra C with z22se had an air flow meter but might be mistaken

your air flow meter is 2 close to the filter as well imo

i would make a silicon intake pipe and reposition the air flow meter further towards the throttle body [say another 4 or so inches ] and try using your K&N

you shuold be oki now as winter is approaching

and dont oil the induction filter as the maf might die !

every body says that the panel filter in the OE air box is the best way to go in terms of idle and take off

you could drill some holes in the side of the air box closest to the inner wing

Yeah I think that sounds like a plan...

May feed a cold air feed in aswell from the grill, a good plan...?

but i cannot determine why u got a p0172 code

like i said unplug battery, clean out intake pipe and throttle body with carb cleaner [deatched from manifold] then go for a grandad drive [not above 3k] for 40 - 50 miles and hope the code doesnt come back

the problem u have is that with an air flow meter as well it could well be that rather than you front lambda, the p0172 code is a generic code rather than vxhall code and it just states that your front lambda is running rich when it could also be your MAF and induction filter

I'd personally go for a standard air box setup, which has been de-restricted internally, and use a K&N panel filter......oh wait, that is what I did 😃

They all suffer with heat soak because the engine bay gets really hot. If you want an induction kit, get a closed one, but again, they are really expensive, and only do the same as my first suggestion.

As said mate, he way to go is just a panel filter mate, take out that little trumpet on the bottom of the airbox but don't mess with the one in the lid. Its tried and tested on the Vec C and its deffo the way to go.

Think I will drill some holes in her like mentioned above along with maybe a air feed, what u think guys?

You have a cold air feed already from the grill. Drilling holes will only give you noise IMO, not really becoming of a Vec C.

If the engine uses a MAF, the oil in the filter can get on the glow wire in the MAF and conterminating it or effectively breaking it. As the MAF is the base for the engine to calculate the amount of air getting in, this can give all sorts of effects.

I see matey, going back standard def seems the best and safest bet along with giving the tb a good clean like Mike suggested 🙂

I use a stock set up but with the bottom trumpet removed. Your best option as said is the stock box with K&N panel filter or regular changed paper one.

MarkV, all vecs C's run a MAF, whether its the Z22SE or Z22YH. The fuel rail is different also with the fuel reg by the tank and no return, also the Cam cover is plastic from 53 onwards.

Steve, what is the disadvantage of removing the top trumpet? I've had mine removed for 6 months, and haven't had any adverse effects.

From what i've been told mate its there to align the airflow over the MAF.

Hmm, only difference I noticed was the turbo was a little louder, as you can hear it spool up, so I thought it was just there to decrease induction noise. I know of the MK5 Astra's, they all remove the top trumpet.

Might see if I can find a second hand air box, and see if putting it back to the original makes any difference?

i tried without the top trumpet on the z22se air box and i noticed no difference, in fact a slight reduction in acceleration
