Timing tool?

I'm still looking into this, but the best priced tool I have found so far is £50 for a sealey camshaft timing tool part number VS4766. Before I take the plunge does anyone have one they can loan out (Pay a desposit of the full value of the tool that is refunded on it's safe return) or if I bought this tool I would be willing to loan it out on similar terms.

Are you replacing the timing chains?

Yes I am. it's rattling like a good un on a cold start and sounds thrashy.
I will be using the TIS to do the job, and do people want a how to on this??

if your changing the chains you can do it without the tool just make shure you line all the coloured links up corectly and turn the engine at least 4 times by hand by the crank to make shure its ok before you put it all back together and start the engine. If you have the chain one link out the pistons will hit a valve so as long as you links line up and you turn the engine to make sure, youl be home and dry! I did mine without the tool and its perfect. make shure you tripple check the balancer chain some times it can jump round a link when your doing it. hope this helps :thumbup:

you don't need the timing tool when fitting a new chain, only when changing the camshafts

I have a timing tool, but have never used it :lol:

top tip,

use a cable tie on each of the cam sprockets to keep the timing aligned, then align the crank mark and fit the tensioner.

please triple check the markings, once at the start, then when the tensioner has been fitted and finally after the tension has been released from the tensioner

I release the tension before fitting the tensioner, then I know it's ok

Ah right, that's why TIS say to push down on the rear guide - it's to release the tensioner into the operational state.. Thanks for the tip.
I took the plunge and bought a decent torque wrench, a teng tool one with the angular guage built in. £81 on t'internet, or £52 from my local tool place. Discount? Certainly sir, and that s why I have been going there for the last 15 years.

You may as well do the balance shaft/water pump chain while you're at it ..

Nah mate, money is a bit tight at the mo, and the balancer chain rarely needs doing. I will check it when it's apart, and the cam chain will be coming off in the near future when I get the money together for some decent cams, so I will probably do it then.

I dont want to worry you mate but i had exactly the same thing as you, the chains started getting a bit noisey in the morning when cold and i thought ill just get the cam chain kit, fit it myself and problem solved. Only to find this:
You can see in the pic the part of the block my old balancer shaft chain was cutting into. The tensioner was nackerd and made the chain go slack. It was a right PITA. The car had to stay off the road until i got the other chain kit. For the amount of efort it takes to get to the chains i would just change them both to be safe. I like to be able to get a job done and walk away from it knowin it wont come back to haunt me.

My cam chain tool was only about £6 from Ebay. The cable tie is a good thing to do :thumbup: . I did my chain myself with some help from the lads on here, it was my very first time 🙂
