think my new cars had a chain kit?

hi all, mrs got a 2.2 astra cab yesterday, having a few probs today but hopfully get them sorted monday?
the car came from a garage as it was the only one i could find in the colour the wife wanted so i did pay abit over the odds but, s**t happerns!

as the gargae told me theres no history of a new chain being fitted and had the usal garage ' its a chain there don'y need replacing chat' i wasn't bothered as i planned to have it done as i did with my vectra!

i have got someone coming in 2 weeks to uprate it for me, however today 'before the bonnet catch jammed' i looked and see the nut on the back that is the tell tail sign of a change has the grooves in!

got all the paper work together and have just gone through it, this invoice was from 20/11/2007 but it was only 7k miles ago

from VX dealer

A) removed cylinder head and sent for repair, rebuilt cylinder head and fitted new timing chain and bled coolant system £468.00
B)check valves & valve guides £271.60
C) VX mot £50.35
D) parts-
VX oil £18.00
12577385-set-drive parts £97.50

24435052-gasket-pump oil/cyli £8.85

and many others parts (filters, screws, seals, etc)

total to pay £1371.41

so...... think its safe to say i can cencel the new chain?

the groves in the tensioner nut is not a way of telling the chain has been replaced but by the looks of the receipt I would have to agree sounds like it has been replaced :thumbup: showo..

As Neil has said, the grooves in the tensioner are not proof that the chain has been replaced, but, it does sound like the chain has failed on this engine and has been repaired and replaced. The 2007 invoice will guarantee its the new chain kit that has been fitted.

personally i would ring up the stealership who did the work and ask about warranty then go down there and get em to sign it on the invoice

it is a lot of money to spend on a car just to sell it 7000 miles later, then again people sell new cars after they depreciate by 50% a few years down the line

thanks guys, i'm pretty sure i'm going to be ok with this chain now, so i've canceled the new one!

i would go down but i'm in east anglia and the invoice is from scotland! i may just ring to confirm, all the work on the car has been carried out at the same garage so they should have a good file of the car!

its only had that owner from new so, as with a lot of astra cabs, most will be a rich couples wife roundabout and it got to 8 years old so it'll of been time for a change (sorry to all male cab owners) dunno..

theres no rattles on start up and none at high revs, in fact it runs better than mine!

That sounds like it'l be a reliable car. Theres nothin worse than not knowing if its been done. It was a constant wory for me so i bit the bullet and changed the lot. 😃 .

I dont mean to upset the apple cart here but just because this work has been done by Vx does not mean the is all hunky dory, mine had the same reciepts from nidd vale vauxhall but soon after i bought it the smoking started, when it got too bad it got stripped down and yes it had a new chain etc but all the pistons had been hit by the valves and shut the ring gaps up (the rings were stuck solid) and piston no 4 had a small piece missing out of it.
So like i say never trust Vx at all and watch for the tell tale signs. 🙂

i'll keep it in mind mate, but as long as there wasn't too must mileage between receipt and this prob, i'd get to the garage as they've not repaired it fully!
