Replacing Stem valve seals

How easier job is it? Ive got a feeling mine are gone, judging by the amount of oil the car seems to get through... was a little low the other week, topped it up to just below the max mark and last night the check oil level came on and it looks like the oil level is down near the min mark on the dip stick... I would say ive driven about 250miles since last week, although I except all the poor running ive had for the last couple of days with the EGR valve problem hasnt helped, was a lot of smoke coming out theexhaust during this time lol...

But Im pretty sure new stem valve seals might help slow the oil burning down a tad... otherwise im guessing it will be the piston rings and thats a job im not really wanting to do... Ill just live with the oil topping up if need be...

does it smoke when you lift off the throttle? if so then its likely to be the stem seals.

to change them is a full head off job anyway so going a few steps further to change rings isnt a biggie imho

Hmm only smokes when your on the motorways and you floor it at about 70mph... I think i can live with it for now lol...

You don`t have remove the head to chang the stem seals (if you have the right equipment). So if a engine needs oil, you first change the stem seals and the you check if its got better with oil consumption.

I know you "can" change stem seals with the head on, but I'm not a fan of pushing valves against pistons to get the springs off etc :p

You need 2 tools. First, you need an adapter which you can screw into the spark thread an which is connected to air pressure. The cylinder you are working on has to have all valves closed. So you have the air pressure in the cylinder. When you loose the valve it cannot fall into the cylinder. Für pushing the valve springs down, you need one of theese tools:

There are different types of tools with different layout, but they all work similar.

Thats it. Never heared of someone pushing the valves against the piston... Who does that kind of things?

just wondering is there a certain way to take out the valve guides? its the first time ive had to do this and dont want to end up smashing the head to bits notsure.gif

If you're onto valve guides...leave it to a machine shop. They are pressed out...then new ones pressed in and then reamed to the valve stem dia. Not really a diy job methinks. lol

hi everyone ive just replaced my valve guides. i used an no 8 drill bit and cordless drill and drilled through each one to make them thinner them put in a 10mm bolt to tap out, i used washers to measure the depth they went in and used them as guides to stop me pushing te new ones in too far, rubber mallet came in handy to tap them in, took me about 4 hours but all in and running fine.

Thats my next job on the head im working on.

What guides did you use and where did you get them?

Did you ream out the guides to make sure they are strait?

Something i have found out recently is that if the valve guides are worn even new stem seals wont sort the problem it might only be a temporary fix. so i think slindborg's suggestion on removing the head was right as this way it can be properly inspected.

i sorced all parts from ebay, trechii was company name, bought seals for about £20 with delivery and then roughly £26 per 8 stem guides, this was alot cheaper than my local motor factors as evrything was near enough double the price

Iv'e just had a full set of valves, gaskets and head bolts from these guys. fab service and quick delivery

I had to order the oil rings for the fuel rail from VX so they won't ber here till next week.

id be lost without ebay because its saved me a fortune rebuilding this engine and like you said these guys are good they sell nearly everything you need and its fast delivery, just gotta strip it again to change the rings. anyone know how i should be running these rings in? there are so many stories and i just dont want to mess it up.

Theres a company called Glews of Goole, they are main dealers (but cheap) If you call them they will ad a private ebay listing for you for any genuine parts that you need.

Must be a nightmare getting stem seals off with the valve still in there.
I'd rather take the head off, at least that way you can re lap the valves, they never seem to seat properly when the seals have been leaking down the back of them.
