lumpy/ rough idle?

Hi all,

i wonder if anyone can help me?
I bought a vectra 150 about 4 days ago and am having an idle issue with it. I was driving to my mates house and when i stopped at a set of lights it was idling rough? I pulled away from the lights it was revving ok and was smooth but stop and it idles funny again? in your opinions what could cause this?

Also when i switched the car off and tried to start it again, it took a few turns to fire up and when it did a puff of smoke came from the exhaust.

I have a recepit for the cam chain being done by a previous owner so is it likely the cam chain could of slipped causing this problem? or is it something else? the car was idling fine upto the point which i said earlier and no engine management light has come up. any help would be greatly appreciated :thumbup:

Hello mate,

Have a good look around this website, there's plenty of info about lumpy idle, but seeing as it's new I would service it, then look into the CTS (coolant temp sensor) (about £10), also could be the coil pack or even the front lambda sensor but these would be slightly dearer.

Also look in the chain section as there is a major issue with the chain on these engines which could explain the receipt.

possibly the egr valve is stuck open, simply undo the two bolts and if the plunger is sticking up simply tap it closed.

you will be better off fitting a blanking plate and egr cheater if the valve is duff

ive checked the egr valve i took it off and had a look. The pin was not in the egr valve it was left in the port so i cleaned the soot off the egr put the pin back in the egr and refitted it, now it runs like shit lol. as for coil packs and such no m8 cos really i need another one to try it with really to see if that is the problem.I checked for a vacuum leak on the tb but everythong is ok there. Im wondering if the precat has shattered or somethin? reason i say this is there is a whistling sound from the exhaust and has had since i got it, but ran ok uptil now?
Im not havin much luck first the alternator now this its only my 5th day owning it.

if the plunger has fallen out the valve is duff and will never work.

So the plunger shouldnt be detached from within the egr then? I took it off and checked it and the plunger was separate. I had to hold the plunger in with my finger and refit it otherwise would have dropped out?

i know i can get the cheater from here but how do i go about wiring it in and where do i get the blanking plate from m8?

you need to visit the dealer for the blanking plate

the egr cheater is available from the z22se shop, use the tabs at the top of each page

ive just seen you can fit the blanking plate on with the egr still attached just moved to one side.
does the blanking plate have to hold the plunger in place so the valve will be closed or do you leave it out so the valve is open?

think you'll need a working one so the valve can still open and close gav!

as above, a duff valve needs replacing before mounting it over the side, so it's cheaper to fit the blanking plate and egr cheater

yeh i agree with vocky

once they are faulty it doesnt matter where u pit it if u intend to keep it hooked up

if the spring mechanism is worn then it will throw out codes every time

just ordered my EGR cheater. is the diagram knocking about on here to fit it?

The link is on this page. I had a similar problem with a dodgy ngk platinum spark plug and they were only 2 months old. Id be lookin at spark plugs and coil pack :thumbup:
