Finally orderd some powerline kit to get my home network set up properly.

I was going to go for the netgear ones, but having worked with Cisco stuff at work, you can't really go wrong with it (plus they look tasty). They also have a 4 port switch built into the second receiver, so I don't need to buy a second switch for upstairs.

i got solwise AV home plugs and they work well matt

be prepared to notice bandwidth loss due interfering electrical items, u will be asking your missus to unplug each socket in the house whilst you monitor signal strenth & quality lmao

As long as I can get more than a constant 16mb upstairs I'll be happy!

u should be looking around 50 -70MB

the 85 turbo's max out at 25MB

aye u notice latency is much better when hitting web pages to that of wireless

it is a lot more stable also 🙂

i never had a drop out using homeplugs !

hte strange thing is matt not one of my customers have used homeplugs consideirng how effective they are in terms of ergonomics, cabling, stability & price

I just can't believe how easy it is to get it up and working.

Plugged it in down stairs, cable from the router to the home plug. Plug the other one in upstairs, cable from that one to the switch. two cables from the switch to the laptop and desktop. Jobs done.

No more having to mess about with ndiswrapper and bw43 in ubuntu trying to get the wireless card to work.

I've also tested streaming to the PS3, and it can stream a DVD fine now, no lag or anything on it.

i just cant beleive how much wireless has been marketed and thought of in such high regard considering how unstable it is

i am suprised ISP's dont offer them as part of a 12 month contract

It's been up and running for a few hours now, and the connection speed has gone up slightly

tis probably down to a few home applicances been turned off

they dont react well to switchable power supplies and extension leads

you should max it out around 80 MB so do a file transfer between your network and monitor network usage and signal strength / quality

Only thing I've got connected on the one down stairs is the router, PS3 and XBOX360. The laptop and desktop are connected via the switch upstairs, so nothing to really try a file transfer with.

I'm now replacing these netgear powerlines, as I've had several instances where they loose sight of each other, and drop off the network. Not bad really for over 3 years of continual use. I'll still keep them as spares.

That's a fair life cycle for something that's on 24/7, but still working to a point.
