SAAB/LSJ/Z20NET pistons are but have a larger pin diameter so would need custom rods or the whole 2.0 crank assembly.

Right, pistons and rods are now in my hands (and the pistons still look like a nice bit of kit to me). I've also just received a large parcel of the "bits and pieces" that also need replacing as part of this rebuild. Not sure whether it's of any use but below is a list of the parts and the current AutoVaux prices (all +VAT):-

Some of the above we could probably have got away without replacing but not worth the risk IMHO. Just got to go and pick up my Saab head gasket from the local Saab dealership and that's all of the bits that I need. With hindsight, I should probably have asked AutoVaux if they could get them as they have a regular GM part number but didn't think about it at the time I reeled off the list of parts to them. Everything bar the rear crank seal is a genuine part.

Thanks again to AutoVaux for a quick and painless transaction (although I do seem to be speaking to them altogether to often).

Nearly there. Engine goes back in this week. Just in time for the lousy weather.

New cylinder block, rods and pistons (looking a bit healthier than the earlier shots) and Saab head gasket

Balancer shafts deleted (again) and 3rd new set of balancer and timing chains in 2 years, timed up and ready to go

Original ported head but with Saab sodium filled exhaust valves and Saab Aero cams (fingers crossed they'll be suitable)

and with the exhaust ports opened up to match the TMS 4-1 manifold

New sump oil temp sensor boss

All ready to go back in

So hopefully a little power boost as well as a more reliable rebuild this time around. :crazy:

Yes, the Saab exhaust cam had the end machined off. Theoretically it should work pretty well with the SC'd engine but we'll have to see what happens once it's up and running. Hopefully it won't be so extreme as to introduce any rough idle, fuelling or emissions problems but will help it all breathe a bit better. That's the theory anyway..... notsure.gif

you forgot to mention the ring gaps were all measured for their respective bores, yes we checked everything this time :lol:

as per wiseco paperwork, they designed the pistons so they should know what size the rebore needs to be dunno..

Yep, the standard Wiseco specced clearance. I had a chat with the guy who was doing the rebore and mentioned that there was some speculation as to whether that was too tight, or not. He said he'd do it to whatever size I wanted but that he personally wouldn't be comfortable doing it to anything different to manufacturers spec, especially as the pistons are quite short and don't have deep skirts.

Vocky did measure each and every ring gap (repeatedly) and there was some variance between some of the rings so we did increase the size of the gap to Wiseco's recommended street/turbo/nitrous gap specification.

All back together again with a lovely fresh strengthened engine in. Just the MOT and running in to do now....

Lovely smooth and quiet idle even with the Saab Aero camshafts in.

Dremel with grinding wheel attachment on it. Probably not ideal but bloody efficient.

It's the remnants of this years Le Mans theme. Haven't plucked up the courage to remove it yet. It's starting to look a little battered in places, so will need to come off sooner, rather than later. Joy. :crazy:
