cause found to tapping oise

Hi all, today i decided to remove the oil pump to see weather or not the balance chain was the cause of my tapping noise, and hopefully after seeing my balance chain tensioner as completely and utterly shot to piece's that is the main cause, also i notice that the mechanic who fitted my timing chain a yr ago didnt know what he was doing as he hadnt lined up the coloured links to the markings (4 links out), even tho the links are out it ran fine, strange one.

So now i need to locate a balance chain kit and attempt to do this tricky work my self, however i do have a few question to ask before i start so here goes.

Can i just move the cam chain around to meet the marking on the sprockets then cable tie them off, or do i need to lock cam sprockets first at TDC then move move chain.
When timing the Crank with the top sprockets, how do i tell if the crank is lined up with the cams.
Am i right in say that you dont need to time up the waterpump, just put chain on.

1 - the links are constantly moving, so they only align every 700 engine turns or so !
you can simply refit the timing chain with a couple of cable ties and then align the crank mark, fit tensione and job done

2 - the timing marks on the cam chain

3 - you MUST align the balancer chain too

The links only ever line up with the timing marks the first time that you fit the chain.

Hi thank you for you information, but i think i done something wrong.

i Had taken the cam chain off completely to gain access to the balance chain with, fitted the balance chain as mentioned then the guides and tensioner.
then i fitted to cam chain to the markings on the exh/inl sprockets and the crank, fitted the guides then popped the tensioner, so i think everything is align right, however i noticed slackness near the crank sprocket, see pic below for slack point, is this right?

as long as the coloured links are in the right place the slack will prob be taken up by the tensioner when you start the car

its tensioned on the cam sprockets but im concerned it will jump with the slack, would i be right in saying that the tension will not taken up all the tension until oil as pumped into it given its full potential.

yes the tensioner will only work when there is oil pressure.
What i'm trying to say is that as long as the marks are in line it should be fine there is a small chance that when fitting the chain you may have just turned the crank Anti clockwise a little causing the slack but like i say as long as the links are in line with the timing marks it should all be fine (Don't forget to turn the engine over by hand first)?

ok thank you, if i got it wrong whats the worst it will do, even tho the chain is on the marks correctly as mentioned on here and in the haynes manual.

Urm bend a few valves crack some guides and maybe some cam followers!!!!!

but if the chain is on all the marks like I said you should be fine.

well hope that doesnt happy, After inspecting the old balance chain tensioner, i noticed chain markings on it, hopefully that was the cause of the tapping noise i was getting, in the progress of putting all back together now, chains on tensioners and guides on, just the oil pump and rocker cover and a few bits and bobs, and then the moment i have been waiting for, a nice running engine with no tapping, hopefully wish me luck lads, sure i do need it.

Took awhile to get my head around it all but i got there in the end, car as never run as good, well impressed with myself, now i look back and i think why did i get so worked up about it, hey what the hell its done, sod the garage fee's when ya can do it yourself
