engine pinking

Had the car remapped last Febuary and since then i've been using Shell optimax petrol, but the last few weeks the wife has been putting in normal Esso unleaded and i noticed there has been a bit of pinking coming from the engine. Today now i have put Esso super unleaded in and it seems to have stopped now. thought i'd try the esso super unleaded instead of the optimax has i have heard it better.

Is this petrol related and if so will it cause damage to the engine if i use normal petrol?

Andy, I have just put the very same question over on VxlSCC. I've been running my car on Shell Optimax for nearly 2 years since it was first remapped and I have recently put 2 tanks of normal unleaded in. The engine has started to pink like mad. I put half a tank of Optimax in on Sunday afternoon and its stopped.

No more normal petrol, i'm sticking to the good stuff.

I'm glad someone else has had this problem too.

at least now i know i'm not the only one who has suffered. must be to do with the way the remap the car, maybe they map it to run on a higher octane fuel notsure.gif

was a little worried at first, when i first noticed thought it was my chain rattling but soon realised it wasn't. Anyway been told on vvoc that tesco do 99 octane fuel so might give that a go if they sell it by me but think i'll defo stick to either optimax or esso super unleaded from now on.
